Rabbit virus improves bone marrow transplants, kills some cancer cells

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 03:29 PM PDT

For patients with blood cancers such as leukemia and multiple myeloma, a bone marrow transplant can be both curative and perilous. It replenishes marrow lost to disease or chemotherapy but raises the risk that newly transplanted white blood cells will attack the recipient's body. Now researcher have found that a rabbit virus can deliver a one-two punch, killing some kinds of cancer cells while eliminating a common and dangerous complication of bone marrow transplants.

Strokes steal eight years' worth of brain function, new study suggests

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 03:19 PM PDT

Having a stroke ages a person's brain function by almost eight years, new research finds -- robbing them of memory and thinking speed as measured on cognitive tests. In both black and white patients, having had a stroke meant that their score on a 27-item test of memory and thinking speed had dropped as much as it would have if they had aged 7.9 years overnight.

Small vortex on wing makes the elegance of birds' flight

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 07:30 AM PDT

Birds use a thumb-like structure on the wing to create a small vortex which makes their turns and landings smooth, new research shows. This is the first time that researchers have found evidence that the effect of the alula is due to a small vortex formed at the tip of the alula feathers.

Good eyes but poor vision: An indistinct world for one in 20

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 07:28 AM PDT

Extremely poor vision can be caused by strabismus in early childhood or by a displaced optical axis. Amblyopia is caused not by organic damage to the eyes but by the brain incorrectly fitting together the images the eyes provide. As a result, the ability to see an object in sharp focus is severely limited. This occurs in more than one in 20 people, researchers report. The authors' study analyzed the visual acuity of over 3200 German individuals aged between 35 and 44 years and determined the frequency and causes of amblyopia.

Personality shapes the way our brains react to eye contact

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 05:16 AM PDT

Eye contact plays a crucial role when people initiate interaction with other people. If people look each other in the eye, they automatically send a signal that their attention is focused on the other person. If the other person happens to look back, the two will be in eye contact, and a channel for interaction is opened. Some research has suggested that eye contact triggers patterns of brain activity associated with approach motivation, whereas seeing another person with his or her gaze averted triggers brain activity associated with avoidance motivation. However, many people find it discomforting and may even experience high levels of anxiety when they are the focus of someone’s gaze. Now researchers have set out to study what lies underneath these individual psychological differences.

Memory loss among the elderly is lower than what was originally thought

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 05:16 AM PDT

The capacity to recall specific facts deteriorates with age, but other types of memory do not, new research suggests. Elderly people remember fewer specific details than younger people and, in general, both groups retain concrete information about events experienced better than abstract information. The main difference is to be found in the capacity to remember more distant facts: youngsters remember them better.

Based on neurons generated from human embryonic stem cells, and not requiring the use of experimental animals, the model allows scientists to test drugs and develop therapies to prevent shingles. It may also contribute to the fight against other viruses -- such as herpes and polio -- that target the human nervous system.

Few opportunities to change: Ocean warming, oxygen loss putting marine life under increasing pressure

Posted: 04 Jun 2015 01:24 PM PDT

If you want to live, you need to breathe and muster enough energy to move, find nourishment and reproduce. This basic tenet is just as valid for us human beings as it is for the animals inhabiting our oceans. Unfortunately, most marine animals will find it harder to satisfy these criteria, which are vital to their survival, in the future.

Food labels nudge diners to eat healthier

Posted: 04 Jun 2015 01:22 PM PDT

When people know the calories and fat content in foods, they lean toward healthier fare, a study of food labels in dining halls shows. Despite municipal and federal legislation in the pipelines for large restaurants and dining facilities to put labels on their foods, there was very little hard data to show such labels are effective in helping people make healthier food choices, until now, the researchers say.

Researchers pilot predictive medicine by studying healthy people's DNA

Posted: 04 Jun 2015 11:18 AM PDT

Scientists have turned traditional genomics research on its head. Instead of trying to find a mutation in the genome of a person with a genetic disease, they sequenced the genomes of healthy participants, and then analyzed the data to find presumed mutations that would almost certainly lead to a genetic condition. Of nearly 1,000 volunteers whose genomes were examined, about 100 had variants predicting a rare disease. Almost half actually had the disease. Introducing Activehours: Waiting for Paychecks is a Thing of the Past

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 04:30 PM PDT

activehours employee payment app

Today’s consumers are all about instant gratification. But most workers still have to wait two weeks between paychecks.

That means, at any given time, they have likely done hours of work over the last week or two and have yet to see the fruits of that labor.

That’s where Ram Palaniappan saw a hole in the marketplace. He launched the Activehours app after noticing employees at his former company often needed cash advances to make it to their next payday.

Palaniappan noticed that online pay statements, smartphones, and other technology gave employees the power to access information about their pay, but not the actual money. So, he thought he could use that technology and information to help employees get paid when they actually need it. He explained to Forbes:

“It lets on-demand workers access their pay as they earn it. I’m not sure why we make people wait two weeks to get their pay. They’re short of spendable cash, but have money they earned they are not allowed to use.”

The Activehours app allows hourly workers or on-demand workers like Uber and Lyft drivers to submit a photo of their online or electronic time sheet, or trip summaries, in the case of drivers. They can then request the money that they have earned but haven’t yet been paid. Workers typically get the money in their bank accounts the next business day. And then Activehours gets paid out by their employers on their normal payday.

The company just launched in May 2014 but is already in use by workers at more than 3,000 companies, including major names like Apple, Starbucks, and Chase.

The company’s success is a testament to its genuine desire to help workers. It doesn’t charge users any fees. They can pay whatever they feel it is worth on a voluntary basis. That’s a huge departure from the steep fees of payday loan services and overdraft fees at most banks. Palaniappan said:

“Companywide, we’re really against how, in the whole pricing model in financial services, the few people get to exploit many people.”

He said that most users pay them at least something. But the company has also received over $4 million in seed capital. So while the company and concept continues to evolve, workers benefit. And the company could very well succeed based on that ability to truly solve a problem that so many people face.

Google May Unverify Inactive Google My Business Accounts

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 12:30 PM PDT

google business 2

Local business owners may want to keep an eye out for an email from Google about their My Business accounts.

A company representative has recently confirmed that, in some cases, inactive Google My Business accounts may become unverified.

The announcement came from Jade Wang, a Google employee, on the Google Business Help forums.

“In some cases, we may contact Google My Business users via email to confirm that they are still actively managing a business page. If a user is unresponsive to our attempts to contact him or her and has not logged into Google My Business for a significant length of time, then we may unverify pages in the account. We’re doing this in order to continue to provide users with the best experience when they’re looking for local businesses like yours.”

Wang goes on to say that business owners who feel their accounts have been unverified incorrectly can get help restoring their accounts by contacting support.

Google My Business is a service that can help business owners promote their business online.

Users can control and update what information about their business will appear in Google Search, Maps and Google+. Users can edit information such as business hours, location and phone number.

Business owners who use Google My Business might want to keep an eye out for an email from Google regarding their account, especially if they can’t remember the last time they logged in.

To prevent an unverified account users might also want to log into their accounts regularly to confirm and update their information.

Myths and Realities About Incorporating for Freelancers

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 10:00 AM PDT

freelancer incorporating

Eager to leave the daily grind and be their own boss, more and more Americans are now working on their own as freelancers.

As of September 2014, 53 million Americans work as freelancers — that’s more than a third of the total workforce!

Some of these freelancers choose to create a formal business entity, while others remain sole proprietors (the default business structure if you never set anything formal). Selecting a business structure is an important decision, and often one filled with anxiety as new freelancers are worried about being open to a lawsuit or paying too much in taxes.

Here we’ll break down some of the key facts and misconceptions surrounding freelancer incorporating so you can make the best decision for your freelancing business.

Freelancers and Liability Matters

One of the key reasons to incorporate or form an LLC (Limited Liability Company) is to help protect one’s personal assets in case the business should be sued.

When striking out on your own, it’s natural to be concerned about liability, and by operating as a sole proprietor, there’s no separation between you and the business.

If your business can’t pay its bills or gets sued, you’ll be personally liable and your personal assets can be called upon to settle the business debt. That’s a pretty compelling reason to form an LLC or corporation as these structures put some separation between your personal assets and the business.

There are a few important things to keep in mind when it comes to liability and incorporation. Forming an LLC or corporation won’t automatically protect your personal assets in all situations. You’re still responsible for your personal actions regardless if your business is a corporation or a sole proprietorship.

And, if you’re a freelancer, chances are you’re providing services (writing, graphic design, consulting, landscape design, etc.) for your clients. If you are negligent when providing these services, you are personally liable for this conduct.

However, there are several key ways that an LLC or corporation can protect your personal assets. First, if you hire employees, contractors or subcontractors, an LLC/corporation can limit liability caused by negligence or misdeeds by these employees.

Second, these business structures can protect your personal assets in matters of contractual liability – should your business not be able to hold up its end of a contract.

For example, if your business needs financing to buy property or equipment, an LLC/corporation can help protect your personal assets (as long as you don’t personally guarantee the loan!).

Incorporating and Taxes

I’ve never met a freelancer who is fond of paying self-employment taxes, but there’s not much you can do to legally avoid them altogether.

One popular strategy to minimize self-employment tax is to form an LLC or corporation and then elect to be taxed as an S Corporation. This way, you’re able to pay yourself in both salary and distributions. The salary portion is subject to self-employment tax, but not the distributions.

Be careful when splitting your payment this way as the IRS watches carefully to make sure S Corporation owners are paying themselves a fair salary for the work they do, and aren’t just getting paid in distributions.

If you’re concerned about taxes and are looking for the best strategy to minimize your self-employment tax, speak with a CPA or tax advisor. In addition, make sure your pricing structure adequately compensates you for meeting your federal and state tax requirements.

Other Reasons to Incorporate

Beyond taxes and liability, there are other important reasons to incorporate or form an LLC for your freelancing business. It can help actually help you win business.

Larger companies typically prefer to work with corporations or LLCs, not sole proprietors.

First, there’s peace of mind that comes with doing business with an established LLC or corporation.

In addition, there are significant tax implications when a corporation hires a sole proprietor as a contractor.

The IRS is watching closely to make sure that businesses properly classify their workers as full-time employees or contractors.

Whenever a business hires a sole proprietor as a contractor/freelancer, there’s a chance that the IRS will double check to make sure that worker is truly operating as a contractor and not as an employee.

But this isn’t a concern when a business hires an LLC or corporation to do the work: there’s no doubt that the LLC/corp is an independent entity and not an employee.

The bottom line is there are several good reasons to consider freelancer incorporating and forming an LLC or corporation for your freelancing business. But it’s important to understand the full picture of how these formal business structures can and cannot help.

EPA Overreach? This New Rule Could Seriously Affect Your Business

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 07:30 AM PDT

epa

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) recently finalized a new rule that critics say could seriously impact landowners in the U.S., including small businesses.

With the Clean Water Rule (PDF), the EPA and ACE are seeking to expand the Clean Water Act’s definition for “waters of the United States.”

The Clean Water Act (CWA) historically has been limited to navigable and adjacent waters. The new definition, scheduled to go into effect 60 days after it’s published on the Government Printing Office’s website, would classify lands as “waters of the United States” if they have water overflow on them at any time during the year.

Seasonal streams, ponds, ditches – even puddles – could fall under the CWA’s purview, giving the EPA jurisdiction over them.

As a result, small businesses across all sectors of the U.S. economy will be impacted, even farmers, according to critics, who add that the rule will make it nearly impossible for some small businesses to do anything to their land without spending tremendous amounts of money.

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB), a chief opponent to the Clean Water Rule, is supporting H.R. 1732, the Regulatory Integrity Protection Act of 2015, which the House of Representatives passed on May 13. It is currently awaiting the Senate’s vote.

The NFIB notes on its website that the Regulatory Protection Act “would provide relief for small businesses by sending the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (the Agencies) back to the drawing board on its problematic Waters of the United States rule. H.R. 1732 will be considered an NFIB Key Vote for the 114th Congress.”

NFIB Senior Executive Counsel Elizabeth Milito testified on May 19th before the Senate Small Business Committee, saying of the Clean Water Rule:

“Contrary to the Agencies’ assertions, the proposed rule will have a tremendous, direct, and immediate effect on many small businesses across all sectors of the economy. NFIB is concerned that the proposed rule represents an unprecedented jurisdictional land-grab, which will affect the rights of private landowners—including many small businesses. As such, NFIB believes that the Agencies have ignored their statutory obligations—under the Regulatory Flexibility Act (RFA) and the Small Business Regulatory Enforcement Fairness Act (SBREFA)—requiring the Agencies to seriously consider the economic impact of the proposed rule on the small business community.”

If the EPA and ACE use this new definition to assert jurisdiction over your land, it will be nearly impossible — or tremendously expensive — to do anything with your land, including digging, excavating, or even laying gravel, according to the NFIB.

Special permits could be obtained to use portions of your land covered by the CWA, but the permits are extremely expensive, according to the NFIB.

A 2006 U.S. Supreme Court case noted the average cost for such a permit to be $270,000. In addition, long waiting periods have been associated with permit processing. And there is no guarantee your permit will be approved.

The penalties for violations of the Clean Water Act can cost up to $37,500 per day.

Open With a Joke … Just Make It Funny

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 05:00 AM PDT

cartoon7189

Two weeks ago I had the honor of talking about the business of cartoons at the National Cartoonists Society’s 69th Reuben Awards. (It’s like the Oscars of cartooning.)

I worked for months on my presentation. I constantly rewrote the script, refined the images, and practiced the whole thing over and over. But as focused as I was on the main content, the things I worried about most were the introductory cartoons.

The thing about being a cartoonist is you mostly work in a vacuum. You write your jokes, draw your pictures, and send them out into the world to succeed or fail without you. But for this presentation, I’d be showing and reading the cartoons aloud in front of my inky peers. It’s a little bit of pressure.

This cartoon was one with which I chose to open my presentation. It’s a little wordy, but it’s a fun image. The caption takes a weird turn at the end and thankfully, it got a good laugh.

And once I had a good couple of laughs under my belt, the rest of the presentation went off without a hitch.

Whew!

YouTube “TrueView for Shopping” Card Ads Link to Products, Websites

Posted: 05 Jun 2015 02:30 AM PDT

YouTube TrueView for Shopping Card Ads

It’s no secret that this is the year to ramp up your YouTube channel and video content, and now there is another incentive to get stared. Recently, YouTube announced that a new version of product listing ads is on the way with an initiative called YouTube TrueView for Shopping.

According to a Search Engine Land article:

“Google Shopping’s technology infrastructure have been booted up on YouTube, and the ads are powered by an integration with Google Merchant Center. The ads are delivered in cards alongside retailers’ video ads on mobile and desktop.”

In other words, when someone clicks one of these ads when browsing through YouTube they will be taken straight to your website. It’s an excellent way to further push your message to a targeted audience through a platform that is second to Google search.

Moral of the story: This announcement has the potential to be a big one depending on how businesses take advantage and how consumers react. The sooner you can get involved, the better.

More Information on Shopping Ads and YouTube and What You Need to Know

According to the official YouTube announcement, the idea behind the integration is to connect the dots between the moment a person watches a video and the moment they decide to make a purchase. This will make it easier for those researching through YouTube to make the call to purchase and then take action.

YouTube TrueView for Shopping works as an in-stream video ad where you can include product details, images, and a link for viewers to click to buy. Below is a screenshot from the announcement that shows what it may look like if someone is watching a video:

YouTube TrueView for Shopping Card Ads

TrueView is built on the cards platform, which you can learn more about here. In short, the cards platform is going to replace annotations, which are used to advertise other videos (as you can see, TrueView works by showing ads in-stream just like annotations does).

Unlike annotations, however, there is not as much customization or control over which ads are going to be overlaying for which videos. It works like this: Advertisers will connect their campaign with a Merchant Center feed and then the ads will be chosen for you based on “contextual and audience” signals, such as geography and demographic information. YouTube TrueView for Shopping will also help advertisers use dynamic remarketing, or showing relevant ads based on the websites viewers have visited previously.

Fortunately, although advertisers lose control in the areas discussed above, they are able to control CTAs in their ads and change those based on desktop or mobile, which means they can also choose whether or not to show prices.

What It Means to You

Several brands with a Google account representative have had a chance to try TrueView early and they reported huge jumps in revenue. Wayfair saw 3X revenue increase per impression and Sephora saw 54 percent life in ad recall. Even better, according to Google’s recent research product review video views on YouTube jumped 50 percent year-over-year, and this number is only expected to increase.

The moral of the story: This is an excellent feature to try and test to see if you see jumps in revenue.

According to Google, the new YouTube TrueView for Shopping will be available in AdWords in the coming months. Let us know what you think after you give YouTube TrueView for Shopping a try.

Per prenotazioni telefonare a Daniela Aragno 333 911 0533 – email daniaragno@libero.it

In allegato la locandina dell’evento.
