N° 5 – Giugno 2015

Tipsy Elves Stumbles Out of Ugly Sweater Niche

Posted: 29 May 2015 04:30 PM PDT

tipsy elves ugly sweater

In the past few years, the ‘ugly Christmas sweater’ trend has been growing. Ugly sweaters have begun to pop up at popular stores like Target and Forever 21, and several sites now cater specifically to your holiday sweater needs; including Tipsy Elves.

Created in 2011 by Evan Mendelsohn and Nick Morton, Tipsy Elves was the result of a lack of new, interesting Christmas sweaters for a more youthful crowd. They merge classic designs with modern trends, and even slide in some crude humor. Morton mused on the site’s beginning in an interview with Business-Opportunities:

“… neither of us could find any fun, new Christmas sweaters to wear to ugly Christmas sweater parties. We realized there was a huge void in the market for this product and set out to create it. We knew literally nothing about manufacturing apparel, making a website, social media marketing or anything related to starting a business. What we did have was a commitment to figuring it out.”

The ‘ugly sweater’ trend is not new. Christmas sweaters even have their own, separate holiday now. And there have been examples of entrepreneurs who have ‘struck gold’ with the ugly Christmas sweater niche before. But Tipsy Elves has gone one better expanding out of that niche in order to provide humorous and unique apparel for all occasions.

Users can find sweaters, T-shirts, scarves, socks, and even fanny packs for Christmas, Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day and even a patriotic collection for the Fourth of July.

Sweaters run around $65 each and the site often offers discounts for first-time customers. They come in a range of styles and sizes for both men and women, and even kids sizes.

Rather than going to second-hand stores and collecting unique sweaters to upscale and sell on ebay, like Anne Marie Blackman and her store My Ugly Christmas Sweater, this site designs each of their sweaters from the ground up.

This offers a more modern twist on the classic, working in a few jokes that would make your grandmother blush. It also allows them to take a bit of liberty in bringing those classic designs, and the humor, into the rest of the year.

Tipsy Elves also offers a selection of officially licensed college sweaters so fans can show off their pride with a festive twist. They combine classic Christmas patterns with college logos and bright, bold colors, and offer both men’s and women’s styles and cuts.

Thanks to an expansion, the site has been able to crawl out of the Holiday season sales and branch into year-round operation. Rather than keeping themselves in a box like grandma’s sweaters, they’ve been able to expand into people’s wardrobes year-round.

Research Prenatal Testosterone Influences Interest in Entrepreneurship

There are, quite literally, thousands of academic studies that examine why people want to run their own companies. So it’s unusual to come across a new paper that takes a novel enough angle on interest in entrepreneurship for me to write a post about it. But here’s a new explanation from a recent article in the academic journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice.

Are You a Good Delegator?

Posted: 29 May 2015 12:30 PM PDT

good delegator

You’ve heard over and over that small business owners need to be good delegators for their companies to grow. Now, there’s some actual proof.

A new Gallup study reports that companies led by executives with high “Delegator” ability enjoyed strikingly higher growth rates and revenues than those without.

In addition, an entrepreneur that is a good delegator with a high Delegator ability was more likely to have big growth plans and create more jobs than those who are average or poor delegators.

Why does delegation matter so much? First, let’s take a closer look at the study. Gallup polled entrepreneurs from the Inc. 500 list and found:

Those with high Delegator talent posted an average three-year growth rate of 1,751 percent, 112 percentage points greater than those with limited or low Delegator talent. CEOs with high Delegator talent also generated 33 percent greater revenue than those with low or limited Delegator talent — an average of $8 million vs. $6 million Finally, Delegators created more jobs at a faster rate. Companies that have CEOs with high Delegator talent created an average of 21 jobs in 3 years, compared with 17 for lower levels of Delegator ability.

A separate Gallup study of more than 1,400 entrepreneurs with employees found similar results.

One-third of those with high Delegator talent say they plan to significantly grow their businesses. In contrast, 21 percent of entrepreneurs with lower or limited Delegator talent had big growth plans.

In addition, 20 percent of those with high Delegator talent plan to boost their staff by 5 percent or more in the next year. Fourteen percent of those with lower Delegator talent say the same.

So what can you do if, like so many of us, you struggle to let go of your “baby” and be a good delegator? Try to develop the six Delegator traits the Gallup study identified.

Admit you can’t do it all yourself. Gallup found that good Delegators focus on “high-yield” tasks; poor ones get bogged down in day-to-day work that someone else could easily handle. Develop a strong team. According to Gallup, this requires understanding what your employees are good (and bad) at, just like understanding what you yourself excel at. Once you have a handle on employees’ skills, you can balance the team by matching the right person to the right role. Provide what your employees need. Whether it’s training, moral support or equipment and technology, good delegators make sure their teams have the backup and support to do their jobs well, and to learn and grow. Don’t micromanage. The clear sign of a non-Delegator is getting obsessed with details and hovering over how employees do things. Good delegators tell employees what they expect, then let employees take ownership of how to accomplish it. Learn to collaborate. Good delegators are eager to hear new ideas from employees, such as new ways of doing things. Letting employees make decisions and have input makes them more loyal. Poor delegators try to make all the decisions themselves. Be a good communicator. Frequent communication, especially positive feedback, is essential to delegating well, because it creates confidence among employees. Let your team know what’s going on in the company instead of trying to manage it all yourself.

Try telling a trusted employee or partner that you’re trying to change your ways, and enlist that person to give you feedback, nudges and warnings when you’re slipping into non-Delegator mode.

If you can accomplish these six goals, you’ll build a strong team of employees — which makes it a lot easier to let go and trust them with tasks you need to get off your plate.

Alibaba Backs Businesses Purchasing Inventory from China

Posted: 29 May 2015 10:00 AM PDT

alibaba trade assurance

If you purchase your inventory from suppliers based in China, you should know about a new free service launched by Alibaba.com, a global eCommerce platform for small businesses.

The service is called Alibaba Trade Assurance. And it is designed to provide small businesses with more security when trading with Chinese suppliers through the site.

Available now to Alibaba.com’s millions of global clients, the service provides buyers with features and protections designed to help ensure that suppliers will honor important contract provisions regarding date of shipment and product quality.

The Alibaba Trade Assurance service vets suppliers based on past performance and Alibaba.com trading history.

Under the Trade Assurance program, small business owners can claim a refund when products aren’t shipped on time or if a product’s quality is lacking. In cases where a settlement can’t be reached in 15 days, Alibaba.com will provide a full refund of the Trade Assurance Amount to the buyer.

The service also enables small business buyers to access a seller’s transaction history.

In an official press release posted on the company’s site, Wu Min Zhi, Senior Vice President of Alibaba Group, explains:

Building trust has always been a hurdle to overcome in international trade and Trade Assurance from Alibaba.com is a data-based way to help buyer and supplier build trust. Even small inventory investments for a small business can have serious repercussions if their order isn’t delivered promptly or doesn’t meet their expectations in terms of quality. We are committed to them and the many other businesses missing out on the benefits of international trading due to trust concerns over product quality or payment security.”

Online sales from global suppliers is on track to increase significantly in the coming years, as is the migration to online eCommerce platforms such as Alibaba.com from legacy platforms.

Business-to-business online sales are slated to reach nearly $25 trillion by 2020, making up about 27 percent of the total global manufacturing trade, according to a recent Frost & Sullivan report. In it, the research firm noted:

Business-to-business (B2B) online retailing has been witnessing strong growth due to the rapid migration of manufacturers and wholesalers  … to open, online platforms. … B2B models will continue to move towards ubiquitous online platforms that allow buyers and sellers from anywhere in the world to transact goods and services with ease.”

Buying online from global suppliers offers numerous benefits. Buyers, for example, can access a wider range of products at more competitive prices. Small businesses may not be realizing these benefits however, due to historical concerns about payment security and product quality.

The free payment protection service is currently available with participating suppliers in China, though Alibaba.com plans to expand the service to global suppliers over the next few years.

Alibaba will refund up to 100 percent of the Trade Assurance Amount. That could be the amount that was agreed upon between the buyer and supplier on a contracted purchase if an order is not shipped by the date specified. It could also apply to products that do not meet quality requirements.

There are other limitations on the service. For example, Alibaba Trade Assurance currently only covers payments made via telegraphic transfer, an electronic method for transferring funds used primarily for overseas transactions. Alibaba.com plans to eventually expand the Trade Assurance program to include other kinds of payments, however.

For more information about Alibaba.com’s new service, see the Trade Assurance User Guide.

Jerry Jao of Retention Science: Customers Buy More, Stay Longer with Subscriptions vs. Flash Sales

Posted: 29 May 2015 07:30 AM PDT

How many times have you bought something from a site because of a flash sale? And then you never buy anything else from them again, or until another flash sale comes up? So while you’re able to get some fast one-off purchases if that’s your business model, it may not be the best way to attract and retain longtime customers that buy even when there is no sale.

Jerry Jao, CEO and founder of Retention Science, shares with us why his research found that subscription-based businesses not only lead to having paying customers longer, but also have much higher average order sizes compared to flash sale sites.

* * * * *

jerry jaoSmall Business Trends: Give us a little bit of your personal background.

Jerry Jao: I’ve started on eCommerce, first started as a power seller on eBay and sold things from Gameboy games to comic books to game consoles. So I’ve always been really passionate about eCommerce as an industry. And later on I founded a couple eCommerce-enabling technologies. I’m specifically focused on CRM and customer loyalty and retention, just ’cause I think it’s a really fascinating problem to solve, and also a problem I ran into when I was in eCommerce. So I founded Retention Science about three years ago. Really excited about solving customer retention problems for eCommerce and retailers from small to big.

Small Business Trends: So you came out with this blog post, and it gets you right to where we want to go — The Subscription Economy is booming, but 72 percent of subscription shoppers don’t make a repeat purchase. That’s pretty bad if you’re in subscription services and you don’t have a repeat buyer.

You also break it down and look at this in terms of subscriptions versus flash sales. So maybe to get things going, talk a little bit about what is the subscription economy, and then also talk about subscriptions versus flash sales.

Jerry Jao: Sure. The subscription economy has been really interesting to watch. And if you think about the early days, whether ShoeDazzle, JustFab and fast forward to three years later, the Honest Company, Dollar Shave Club. There’s been quite a few businesses that took advantage of this rising business model and really made some success out of that. If you looked at all the most recent growth around Dollar Shave Club, I think they raised over $60 million to grow. And also the Honest Company is rumored to file for an IPO later this year at a valuation of close to $1 billion.

And you look at this business model and you question, what’s so special about this business. And one thing that we notice is the recurring aspect of business. It makes a business much easier. It makes it much easier for business to forecast their revenue, and the customer churn is much more measurable. It’s a little more defined, and as a result, there are better and more festive ways that they can reduce what we call customer churn.

If you look at different business models, eCommerce is really sexy to begin with because consumers have much more access to different types of product, all with their fingertips. And a couple clicks away, they can search for a bunch of different products that they want to buy. But the one thing that’s always been really interesting is the flash sales model. The flash sales model made its way to the market and did really well because at the beginning the flash sales side had the advantage of not having to hold any inventory of product. And as you and I know, inventory is one of the biggest killers for eCommerce sites because the more inventory you hold, the more money the business will sit on and it presents a very big risk.

So, flash sales sites grew really, really quickly and then in the market we saw many of them, targeting both the premium markets sector as well as some of the lower end markets. There are many, many different flash sales sites — Zulilly of course, which went public last year. There are a lot of exciting businesses that rose around this particular business model, because there are advantages that come with the business model.

However, over time, one thing we discover and found really interesting is that it’s also a business model that wasn’t necessarily sustainable in the long term. And we saw a lot of businesses slowly deteriorating from not being able to continue to match its growth rate that it experienced early on. And we started looking to just what exactly the flash sale sites are selling and why did people eventually lose interest. And one of the biggest [things] we discover is the novelty wore out over the last three to five years? And, at the end of the day, flash sale sites present very exciting value proposition in a sense that it’s selling previous season’s products at a discount.

But at the same time, how many of us are really just looking for these discounted products? [Many] of them are an impulse buy — meaning how many of us can buy last season’s Gucci purses? How many of us can continue to buy very expensive, trendy couches or rugs or just all those really cool things? But maybe most of us don’t need [it], on a monthly or on a daily basis.

If you look at the subscription business model, how they’ve been very successful and how they’ve become very desirable over time is that most of the subscription businesses, they identify a very, very niche need. And that need typically has a recurring mechanism built into it.

So if it’s diapers (and you have newborns to toddlers) this is a consistent need that you will have. It suits the recurring business model very well for the subscription economy. Same with razors — think about you and I. For most men, we have to shave, whether it’s daily or weekly. And so those are needs that recur on a very regular basis. So I think because the subscription economy really identifies certain things that are a necessity, verses nice to have, then the subscription economy quickly really rose above the noise.

Small Business Trends: But interestingly you say 72 percent of subscription shoppers don’t make a return purchase.

Jerry Jao: The reality is that many customers drop out. So then the subscription customers actually made more repeat purchases within the first three month based on what we measure. And, of course, once those customers actually became subscribers, we definitely noticed that the customers stay on much, much longer versus the flash sale site customers.

Small Business Trends: Yeah, I was looking at your average order per customer in twelve months, in the post here. Subscription, $7.68 vs flash sales, $1.41. So it seems like if you’re a subscription business, because the model calls for customers to buy on a monthly basis, or subscribe and stay and pay on a monthly basis, not only do you get more orders but you can spend more of your time and effort on keeping those folks — making the value for them enough that they stay on board. Whereas flash sale, you’re always in customer acquisition mode.

Jerry Jao: You’re absolutely right, Brent. And the challenge of constantly being in acquisition mode — it’s not only very, very expensive and the investment for businesses upfront is really high. It’s hard to retain, and it’s hard to actually measure if there is a clear pattern in terms of how the customers are behaving with you. With the subscription business model, it is a little easier to be able to find a niche to target. And of course, it’s hard to grow a business — it doesn’t matter what kind of business model you have. But, at the end of the day, with subscription business models there’s a more clear pattern. And when you are subscribed as a customer to the business, there’s a lot more information businesses get out of you.

For example, if I bought something on Zulilly or on Fab, it’s hard for the business to know: who am I as a customer? What’s my price sensitivity? Because every product is discounted versus if I look at a subscription package, typically they have different tiers or products. So, if you look at Dollar Shave Club, they have the lowest tier razors, which some people think that fulfills their needs, versus let’s say, you and I typically grow a bigger beard. We might need the executive package which is more expensive, but it’s more durable.

So, based on the product that we subscribe to, typically businesses have quite a bit of information that they can assume of the customers. And therefore, market to us very differently in order to retain us. And that’s something that’s definitely very powerful.

Small Business Trends: Is it possible, or how difficult is it, for a company who started with the flash sale mentality to change or transition over to the subscription mentality?

Jerry Jao: A lot of businesses are evaluating themselves and what they carry, and then see that the business model can transition or have both. One thing we’ve seen that’s fairly interesting is that many of the subscription models — eventually they also evolve into an eCommerce, meaning that people can buy on their site one-off.

So, if you look at Birch Box, if you look at the Honest Company, both of these, initially subscription businesses, now also have an eCommerce component on the site. So on their website, customers can also buy a product one-off instead of just having to subscribe to their subscription boxes or bundles. And so, if you look at flash sale sites, it depends on their supply chain, depends on the kind of product that they carry. It’s that easy for people to subscribe to that I think there is definitely an opportunity for them to switch.

And, for example, look at JustFab. They sell jewelry. They sell purses, and on a monthly subscription basis they will send you a pair of shoes for, I think, just under $40 … $39.99. And if there are flash sale sites that focus on, let’s say, shoes or other types of product that they can find on a monthly basis, they can deliver the same type of goods at the same cost to their customer. Then they can certainly experiment with that business model as well.

Small Business Trends: Can you point people in the direction of where they could find out more? Get the infographic, see the blog post?

Jerry Jao: Sure, absolutely. They can go to retentionscience.com/subscription, and they can find a lot of information beyond just the infographic.

What You Need to Know About Matt Cutts’ Departure from Google

Posted: 29 May 2015 02:30 AM PDT

matt cutts leaves google

Previous Head of Webspam at Google Matt Cutts has been on leave since last July and it was speculated that the 10-year veteran of the position wasn’t going to return.

Cutts has been the mouthpiece for Google on SEO and algorithm issues for Webmasters, so since July, the announcements have been coming to us via the Google blog, forums, YouTube channel, and conferences as opposed to coming from one specific person.

Google had not come forward with anyone taking Cutts’ place — until now.

Unfortunately, the new employee holding the Head of Google Webspam title has not been officially announced. But Google did tell Search Engine Land that the new titleholder is only going to take over the job of managing Webspam — not Cutts’ other job as general spokesperson.

According to the Search Engine Land article:

“It was never the case that the head of Web spam should also be a general spokesperson on listing issues. That was just a natural synergy between Cutts being both knowledgeable about Google’s listing processes in general and his personal interest in taking that role.”

Despite the fact that someone new has taken over, it looks as though how we get our Google information and announcements as well as where we ask questions and find answers — the Google blogs, Google forums, YouTube channel, and conferences — is going to stay the same as it’s been since July in light of Cutts’ absence.

Based on the quote from Search Engine Land, it looks like Google prefers it this way and never really planned to have Cutts take on the spokesperson role the way he did. Perhaps Google is going back to their original plan all along, which is to not give Webmasters someone specific to turn to with questions or in times of trouble, but rather use all of the resources Google has set out to help us.

So What is Cutts’ Current Role with the Company?

Although someone new may be the Head of Webspam, this doesn’t mean that Matt Cutts leaves Google entirely. Cutts is still on leave with the company, so we don’t actually know how his role will change in the future.

Barry Schwartz of MarketingLand suspects we will hear within a month or two the official word from Google on Cutts’ future with the company, and that seems like a pretty good estimate.

A Look Back at Matt Cutts Videos and Articles

Below are several articles that feature Cutts’ advice about certain SEO topics. To date, Cutts has recorded over 500 videos answering Webmasters’ questions, so it can be a little bit overwhelming to try and sort through which ones matter most to you.

Use some of these articles to do that sifting for you and keep some of Cutts’ advice fresh in your mind.

Old Matt Cutts Videos that Still Hold True Today

Five years later, there are quite a few videos that Cutts published that still hold true even today. These are the lessons that continue to be repeated over and over again, but Google has remained firm on many subjects such as rich content, load times, rankings for big brands and how small brands should compete, CMS system moves, and more.

Title Tags, Myths and Website Size

The best part about this Matt Cutts video was hearing about four conspiracy theories that Cutts wants to end. These include issues about paying for AdWords affecting your organic rankings, Google changing algorithms so people will pay more in AdWords, black hat fads, SEO tools and more.

Matt Cutts on Why Social Signals Shouldn’t Be Considered for SEO

This has been an ongoing debate amongst Webmasters, so this article gives us the perspective from Cutts. Although this may be changing in the future, this was a huge announcement at the time and is technically still the most recent thing we’ve heard from Google on the topic. Cutts talks about two major reasons Google doesn’t use social signals as ranking factors here.

Matt Cutts Tells Us to Stop Guest Blogging, Backlash Forces Him to Specify

In probably one of the most influential and talked-about quotes from any Google spokesperson ever, Cutts wrote a blog post on his own blog that said “stick a fork in it, guest blogging is done.” This became a huge topic of discussion amongst Webmasters, much of which was negative feedback, which ultimately forced Cutts to have to backtrack and specify what he meant.

Stem cell switch on the move

Posted: 29 May 2015 05:33 AM PDT

The roots of a plant are constantly growing, so that they can provide the plant with water and minerals while also giving it a firm anchor in the ground. Responsible for these functions are pluripotent stem cells. In order to avoid differentiation and to remain pluripotent, these stem cells are dependent on signals from their neighboring cells. These signals are generated by only a small group of slowly dividing cells in the so-called quiescent centre inside the root. Biologists can now demonstrate how signals in plant roots determine the activity of stem cells.

DURATA: 112′ VISIONE CONSIGLIATA: TCRITICA: 3 PUBBLICO: 4REGIA: Carlo VerdoneATTORI: Claudia Gerini, Carlo Verdone, Andréa Ferréol, Nello Mascia, Didier de Neck, Alain Montoisy, Patrice de Mincke, Mino Reitano, Nuccia Fumo
