Are These Mistakes Worsening Your WiFi Using Experience?

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 07:30 PM PDT

040615 wifi router

You have Internet connection at your house. And you have a WiFi router as well. So, you can easily expect to get the best WiFi connection in all parts of your house.

But, unfortunately, you are not getting it. The WiFi signal is pretty poor.

So, you might need to rethink your WiFi usage process completely. But before that, you need to understand where you are going wrong.

Are you making any of these mistakes while using your WiFi?

If yes, then you should immediately take proper steps to mend them to enhance your WiFi usage experience.

You are Placing the Router on the Floor

So, you have put your router on the floor. And you are not getting WiFi signals that are strong enough? This is bound to happen. This is because, the WiFi signals are known to move sideways as well as downwards. So, if you are placing it on the floor, you are blocking the way through which the WiFi signal is likely to travel around your house. Hence, if you want to get the best signals from your WiFi router, you should place it at a certain height, which is at least five to seven feet above the ground level. It will improve WiFi signal reception.

You are Hiding Your Router

Are you afraid that if someone sees your router he or she might ask for it? Otherwise, there’s really no reason to hide your router. And when you hide the router, you are ensuring that its performance diminishes significantly. This is because a lot of materials are known to obstruct the WiFi signal. In fact, a number of household materials are also known to block WiFi signals. Some of these include:

Household electronic appliances Concrete walls Bluetooth devices

Even humans are known to cause interference in spreading WiFi signals. So, hiding your router might cause disturbances to the WiFi signals, thus hampering its strength. Instead, you should place it in the open space. Remember, the cabinet is never the right place to put your WiFi router.

Placing the Router beside a Jar of Water

You have got a fish tank in your house. You have placed it on a table. And you are placing the WiFi router on the same table, just beside the fish tank. And now, you find that the WiFi signals are quite poor and you don’t have access to the Internet from all corners of the house. This is quite natural and you might have to face it if you place the WiFi router close to a large jar of water as well. No, the fishes aren’t the main culprit here. In fact, water is. WiFi signals are known to be obstructed by the reflection caused by water. So, it’s better not to put the WiFi router close to any container of water.

Putting the Router Just By the Side of an Electronic Device

These days, it’s quite obvious that you will have a number of electronic devices in your house.

But did you know that they might play a major role in making your WiFi using experience worse? Most of these instruments cause interference for WiFi signals. So, the strength of the signal is compromised. It might even be obstructed by these appliances. This problem increases when you place the router close to your television or the microwave, cordless phones, or any other electronic instrument.

So, to ensure that this does not happen, keep the WiFi router at a safe distance from these equipment, so that they can’t cause disturbance in the flow of the WiFi signal around your home.

Keeping the Router Just Beside the Window

It really feels great if you can sit by the window, which overlooks the garden, while working. It can be a great idea to enjoy the scene outside and work at the same time. Are you placing the router there, too? It is never the right thing to place the router beside the window. Of course, you don’t want people outside or on the roads to use the WiFi signals from your router. When you are placing the router right besides your window, almost half of the WiFi signals are going out of your house. So, that’s half the signal that is remaining unused. This leaves you with just the other half, which is quite less compared to your needs. So, you are going to have a poor performance in terms of WiFi connectivity.

A Corner Isn’t the Right Place

A WiFi signal needs to spread throughout the house. Only then you can expect to get Internet connectivity from all corners of the house. But you are placing the WiFi router at one corner of the house. So, it loses the capability of spreading the WiFi signals around on all sides. The concrete wall on one or two sides of the router cause obstruction and the signal is not transferred. This hampers the WiFi usage experience. However, you can place the router at a central location to ensure that you can use strong WiFi signals throughout your house.

It is important to know the right ways of using WiFi. Otherwise, you might unknowingly be making mistakes that are going to hamper your WiFi usage experience to a great extent.

The Evolution of Affiliate Marketing

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 06:30 PM PDT

Welcome AM DAYS EDITA favorite session of Affiliate Management Days continues to be the panel of key players in the affiliate networks. Known for controversial topics and heated discussions among respected competitors, the fifth annual network panel filled the room. Rarely do managers get the opportunity to hear the brightest influencers in our industry address the industry as a whole both present and future.

Robert Glazer, Founder and Managing Director of Acceleration Partners, skillfully guided the panel to the hottest trends and discussions within the industry. Below are the representatives from the selected networks.

Brian Littleton – Founder and CEO of Shareasale
Desiree Toto – Product Business Development Lead of CJ Affiliate by Conversant
Choots Humphries Co-President of LinkConnector
Todd Crawford –Co-Founder of Impact Radius

Michael Jones – Head of Affiliate of eBay Enterprise

The Biggest Change in the Industry — Attribution Takes The Win

The first question to the panel was to discuss the biggest changes in the industry since last year’s panel.
Brain Littleton started the discussion addressing how the momentum of attribution continues from last year. More merchants and affiliates participate in deeper discussions with regards to attribution.

Positioning Affiliate Marketing As An Incremental Channel

Brands continue to require validation that the affiliate marketing channel provides incremental value. Networks and service providers need to provide the strategy and tools that relate to providing the evidence of these incremental sales.

“If you don’t have answers in regarding incrementality as a network or service provider you are in a lot of trouble.” states Michael Jones of eBay Enterprises.

Todd from Impact Radius encouraged managers to focus on the data. As brands continue to test their vendors (or in house managers) about incremental value, the manager requires the most accurate data. With this accurate data, the affiliate manager or service provider can provide an objective view or strategy. Todd explains that we are in the ‘digestion point’ where we need to have discussions based on the data collected.

There Is No One Size Fits All Attribution Solution

Acceleration Partners divides their attribution into internal (looking within the affiliate program) as well as Intra attribution (collects data across all channels)

Attribution is the most talked about and least acted upon topic in Affiliate Marketing – Robert Glazer of Acceleration partners explains.

Desiree Toto of CJ Affiliate by Conversant explains the CJ approach is more analytical approach that integrates with existing software such as Omniture. The focus is less about the transactional level but more about proper representation within the overall analytic platform.

In regards to attribution resulting in fractionalized commissions, CJ’s approach looks first from a data prospective. After reviewing the clickstream, CJ noticed less than 1% of the affiliate clickstream had multiple affiliates in the clickstream. As such, CJ does not focus on attribution level commission structure but rather providing data from the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) prospective.

Todd Crawford of Impact Radius explained the value of attribution modeling and crediting logic accordingly. Attribution models views all players who contributed to the conversion. With this view, a manager can determine if adjusting the payment/commission makes sense. A holistic view of all marketing channels is crucial.

“If you are looking only at affiliate marketing, you are missing 90 percent of the picture.” states Todd Crawford of Impact Radius.

Beyond The Last Click

Michael Jones of eBay Enterprise clarifies that affiliate marketing is so much more valuable than that last click sale. All networks were in agreement. Attribution and a focus on incremental value creates sustainability for the affiliate channel. While attribution may create a painful change in the long run, the benefits to the channel far outweigh the pain.
Brian Littleton of Shareasale warns to use common sense when evaluating attribution data and reviewing multichannels. Data can support any channel. Be wary of feeling overwhelmed by the data and making bad business decisions as a result.

The panel chorused in agreement and stressed just because you can something does not mean you should. Choots Humphries confirmed the importance of aligning attribution models with overall goals. Loop back to ensure goals were met.

“Consistently the affiliate channel proves to be the most profitable channel including the ability to bring new customers. Our industry will thrive in the intra solution. Not a lot of changed d but a lot has been talked about.” — exclaims Choots Humphries of LinkConnector.

Communication is Key

With attribution taking front stage, communication is more crucial than ever. Affiliates, managers and CMOs all need to be part of the communication and strategy.

If a tiered commission structure is presented, affiliates need to be part of the discussion. In addition, overly complicated commissions generate distrust among the affiliates. The strategy should involve communication and implementation strategies.

On the corporate side, account managers need to be part of the discussions/modeling. Is affiliate being considered in the modeling up front versus a retro vision and fix?

It’s A Public Relations Things

“Affiliate marketing has negative baggage that it has carried with it for years. It is hard to break that perception. Perception is reality .” explains Michael Jones of eBay Enterprise.

The attribution products, for multichannel need, prove their value. Affiliates are an easy way to justify the cost of the software. You can call back commissions but not any other marketing fees. Make sure they aren’t leveraging affiliates to prove their value. Instead us the attribution modeling to prove the affiliate channel value. In the end, attribution is a new friend of affiliate marketing.

Mobile Takes the Stage

Compared to last year’s discussions, mobile sites are now tracking. However, the problem remains on how do we get companies to get app tracking? Merchants aren’t even informing managers that an has been launched.

“Problem is the merchant doesn’t see the app as part of marketing. It’s another convenience for our customer. It is done separate from marketing and rarely has goals around it.” Todd Crawford explains “This needs to be incorporated into the overall ecommerce strategy.”

However, Brian Littleton, and panelist agreed, that in app tracking should not be a priority for network. Currently there is no clear strategy with regards to the apps resulting in a lot of disorganization. Data will not assist with this issue.

Additionally, there are inherent tracking issues due to the cookie drop technology. On an app there is only one pixel. The advertiser is going to track the life of the users. Not going to pick affiliate marketing. You can’t add more. Pixel called an SDK. As such you need to create an SDK that LinkConnector spends resources to take advantage of this situation. There are technologies out there trying to resolve this gap. Desiree Toto of CJ Affiliates explains CJ does have its own SDK but there is a lot of complexity in the tracking.

The conclusion of this interactive and thought-provoking panel illustrates the need for a holistic view of all marketing channels to illustrate the inherent value of the affiliate channel. All panelist agree in the importance of accurate data but more importantly on the strategic use of this data. As the industry and technology grows together, a mature and powerful affiliate channel will take the spotlight.

Oakland Program Helps Underprivileged Youth Start Businesses

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 04:30 PM PDT

Anyone can become an entrepreneur. But some have less access to the education, mentors and resources that can be a huge help in starting a business.

That’s why Youth Impact HUB Oakland aims to help the youth in low income areas of Oakland, California. Part of the Impact HUB network of co-working spaces around the country, Oakland’s Youth Impact program is the first of its kind in the network’s more than 60 locations. The program provides guidance and training regarding things like continuing education, job seeking and entrepreneurship.

Part of this initiative is the HUB’s year-long fellowship program, which teaches social entrepreneurship to youths between the ages of 16 and 24 who face economic barriers.

Last year, which was the the program’s first, 16 young people were selected based on an application and interview process. They were then matched with business mentors from the community and challenged to create business plans, goals and objectives. At the end of the program, participants had the opportunity to pitch their ideas for the chance to receive seed funding to start their projects.

Amanda Greene, co-director of Youth SEED, one of the local organizations that partners with Youth Impact HUB Oakland told the Huffington Post:

“We provide the platform for young folks who lack resources to become the leaders they have the potential and passion to be. It’s really clear to us that to have a sustainable future and have social equity in it, we have to engage young people.”

This type of program has the potential to make a huge impact on the Oakland community and its young people. Technology has made entrepreneurship more and more accessible to the young, even those who haven’t finished or attended college. But there are still a lot of resources that can make starting and running a business a lot easier. And those who live in low-income areas or face other economic barriers could be turned away from entrepreneurship because of those hardships.

So programs like the HUB in Oakland can make the dream of starting a business more reachable for those young people. Good ideas aren’t exclusive to the people who have the resources to make them a reality. So by giving young people more of a chance to make their business ideas happen, a lot more business and social good is possible.

Everything You Need to Know About Attribution and Affiliate Marketing

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 03:30 PM PDT

This is a live blog post from AMDays in San Francisco.

Topic: Everything You Need to Know About Attribution and Affiliate Marketing.

Presenter: Todd Crawford (pictured above), Impact Radius

What is Attribution?

It’s understanding your data throughout the click path of your consumer buying cycle to understand what touch points and steps they took to complete a sale or final desired action, and then assigning a value to each of these different actions.

It’s another way of getting insights into your data by analyzing the path your consumer took to buy.

Three Touch Points to Consider: Introducer (the first touch point.) Assist (the middle touch points.) Closer (the last click to purchase.) Common Attribution Models: First click, Last click. Fractional (Linear, Position, Time Decay.)

It’s essential to not just look at your data, but understand what it means. Attribution is analysis.

Note: A lot of people actually don’t need attribution. If you only have a few channels and a few people managing it, it’s likely not necessary.  However if you have many channels and many people managing it, attribution will help you understand the value of team and channel efforts and big picture results much more clearly.

What can Attribution Tell Us?

It answers the what, where, when and why of each of your ads and channels.

What Do We Want From Attribution? Better results (lift, savings, higher ROAS etc.) No surprises (money badly spent or results we didn’t want.) Eliminates chance. Incrementally. Why Haven’t We Mastered This Yet? Intra-affiliate. Source of data. Missing pieces. Company politics.  Modelling Versus Analysis

Modelling gives us perspective. We have to look at the data critically and think about it to make sure the information we are looking at is actually accurate.

Ask the question “what are the most common paths to conversion”.

Using multichannel, as an example, it might look like this:

Google SEM -> Direct -> Email -> Bing SEM -> Google SEM -> Email -> Direct -> Newsletter -> Ebates -> Facebook Ad -> Google SEO -> Google SEM -> Affiliate

How do we Leverage Attribution? By having clear goals and KPIs that are most important to you and ensuring that’s set up correctly for accurate tracking. Leverage your data. Analysis.

One of the value measurements to add to affiliate specifically is in the benefit of zero cost to zero conversion, versus the extremely high cost to zero conversion in other channels that require ad buys, such as the cost of zero conversion through Google paid search campaigns. Affiliate has no cost if the action doesn’t take place. That’s a huge benefit to affiliate, and should be weighed when adding value to that channel.

In Summary: Attribution is inevitable if you have enough data and enough moving pieces to consider. Data is your frenemy — the insights can provide both good and bad news. You need to put in the effort to get the results!

Should I Hire a Freelancer or Not?

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 02:30 PM PDT

040615 freelancer

The virtual economy has provided many amazing opportunities.

You can start a business with virtually no overhead, and have many tools to scale that growth as it happens (e.g. SaaS, cloud hosting).  The new economy has also made using non-employees easier and more efficient than ever.

I’m assuming the reader has an understanding of tools such as and Fiverr.  If not, take a minute to review.  I want to address some of the issues that arise from working with non-employees.

First of all, I use the term non-employee as a catch-all phrase for anyone that is not a W2 employee.  Although the legal distinctions are not important for this article, suffice it to say that the law draws the line at how the individual is treated.  If the business controls how they work, when they work, if they fire them, and if they cannot subcontract the work or make a profit on the work, then they’re employees.

When you hire somebody through eLance, that person may not be the one actually performing the work, which leads us to Issue No. 1. Who is actually performing the work?  I cannot stress this enough. You need to know who is actually performing the work.

I recently engaged a firm to do some software development work.  The firm was based in Oklahoma City, but the Chief Technology Officer was in San Diego and the development team was both in the US and Romania.  Not an unusual arrangement in the development world, but if I had thought I was going to walk into the Oklahoma City office and talk to a programmer, I would have been sorely disappointed.

Knowing who is doing the work also gives you the ability to make sure they actually have the skills that you need.  There are a lot of aggregators out there that are basically acting as the face for others who are doing the actual work.  Again, that is not necessarily bad, but what happens if the middle man goes away, and you’re left with half complete work, and that individual doesn’t speak English?  You’ve got a problem on your hands.

Lastly, subject non-employees to the same level of scrutiny that you do when hiring employees. (See my article here on hiring.)  They’re doing the same work, so you need to have the same confidence.  The tendency is to not put in as much due diligence, but again I would argue it is more important vetting your non-employees because they will be acting more independently.

There are generally four reasons you want to involve non-employees:

You need the expertise. You have your core team, and they’re good at what they do, but you have a special project or need that needs additional expertise.  Non-employees are ideal for these situations. Seasonal staffing. If your business is seasonal, you probably don’t want to keep fully staffed year round.  Maintaining a core of essential personnel and supplementing with seasonal staff works nicely with non-employees. Temporary staffing. Unlike seasonal staffing, temporary occurs when you have a sudden change in business.  Say you land a large new customer, but are not sure if it is going to be a long term arrangement.  Rather than hiring a permanent employee, consider a temporary arrangement with a non-employee, or even a temp to hire.  Temporary staffing also works great in fluid situations where you’re uncertain about the direction your business/market is heading, and you don’t want to make long term commitments. Non-essential. If it isn’t a core part of your business (e.g. payroll, accounting) it may very well be more cost effective  to engage a non-employee.  With small businesses, you often need lots of different expertise, but can’t afford to have one over everything; too much overhead.  Non-employees or long term vendors make an ideal solution. Relationship

Don’t give someone a huge important job right out of the gate.  Start with a smaller, less important job to test their skills, ability to follow instructions,  and meet deadlines.  I learned this the hard way, and I had been forewarned!  At the end of the day, you’re dealing with people and all the problems that come along with them.  Just because you didn’t put them on as an employee doesn’t mean that they don’t have family problems and money issues.  Their problems will eventually become your problems, just like your employees, so don’t setup false expectations!  They should require less management (notice I didn’t say NO management) and supervision, but you cannot set it and forget it.

I would argue that communication with non-employees is even more important than your internal communication. You already have relationships with your employees.  You know what to expect and when. More importantly, you already have established lines of communication and expectations around them. Non-employee relationships have no such supporting infrastructure. Set communication expectations up front and use the tools available.  Trello and Basecamp are two of my favorites, but there are plenty of others.  Include them in whatever internal communication that is appropriate. This depends on the nature and length of their engagement, but the more you integrate with your existing team, the more successful you all will be. There is a tendency to treat non-employees as outsiders, and this is dangerous. For example, we include our non-employees in monthly team conference calls and all applicable email notifications.

First, I would obtain a very good contract.  Don’t skimp on this, because if you have to enforce it, you will need something other than whatever you find on the Internet.  Likely you’re dealing with multiple jurisdictions (i.e. other states or countries).  As a practical matter, it may never make economic sense to enforce it, but having good fences makes good neighbors.  Second, include a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).  Again, don’t just pull something off of a Google search.  You should be able to use the NDA for future non-employees, so you can spread the cost around.

Third, and probably most important, is control of the work product. Some people will tell you that you can’t completely protect your work product from being “re-used”, and they’re probably right in some circumstances (e.g. custom software code). That being said, it is very important that you protect your intellectual property to the extent that you can. Sites like 99Designs incorporate a copyright release into their platform, but if you’re not using a platform like that, you need to get it in writing that you own it!

Never pay someone upfront!  I don’t care how much they rail and complain.  It’s just bad business. The exception is if there are significant expenses involved in the project (i.e. supplies or materials). Even then, make sure you have actual physical control over those assets. Consider an old construction technique of using retainage.  Hold 10 percent back after completion of the project to allow you to make sure there aren’t additional items that need to be corrected prior to making final payment. Set milestones and pay only when they are complete.

If you’re using online tools like GitHub, make sure that you own the account/repository, and add them as collaborators. This allows you to maintain control of the product, should something go sideways.

Beware scope creep! Setting clear guidelines and project expectations up front should include process to handle a change in what needs to be done. This is critical for both parties.  You don’t want them to come back and say “I had to do additional work” when you didn’t want it done. A clear “change order” process prevents this. If there was no change order, there is no additional money, period.

Consider paying for the project and not by the hour. This puts both you and the non-employee on the same page. At the end of the day, you don’t care how long it takes them, just that the work is complete.  If you must pay by the hour, establish a budget, and break it down by milestones. This allows you to make sure there are no surprises (or, at least, only minimal ones).

Spotlight: Studypool Provides Fast Online Homework Help

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 12:30 PM PDT

Making it through school can be difficult if you don’t have any help. In the past, students looking for homework help would have to stay after class or sign up for study groups. But technology now offers new opportunities. That’s where Studypool comes in.

The business, which was started in a college dorm, helps students find tutors who can answer their homework questions quickly. Read more about the company and its founders in this week’s Small Business Spotlight.

What the Business Does

Provides students with homework help.

Interested students can sign up for an account on the site and then post questions they need help with, along with a budget and deadline. Then the site’s tutors can bid on each question they’d like to help with. Student can choose a verified tutor based on their profile, reputation and reviews. Tutors then explain the question and help the students better understand their assignments. Students with simple questions of under 250 characters or one image can even receive help for free.

Business Niche

Providing answers quickly.

For students with upcoming deadlines, getting questions answered quickly can be paramount. So Studypool makes timeliness a top priority. According to CEO Richard Werbe, students can receive answers in about eight minutes on the site, which is 50 minutes faster than competing sites.

How the Business Got Started

In a dorm room.

Founders Werbe and Jimmy Zhong knew that they wanted to start a business. So, while they were in college at Emory University, they got the idea to start a website to connect students with fast homework help.

Biggest Win

Getting initial seed funding.

Werbe says:

“It has given us the chance to grow at a faster rate, hire more developers and help more students get their homework questions answered.”

Biggest Risk

Dropping out of school.

Luckily, Studypool has taken off. But if it hadn’t worked, the decision to drop out of school could have delayed or ruined other career options.

How They’d Spend an Extra $100,000

Hiring more full-time developers.

With more developers, Werbe says they could continue to improve the Studypool product.

Business Motto

Work as a close-knit team.

All of the Studypool team members are good friends. So they often do things together outside of work, such as going to dinner or sporting events. And Werbe says that makes the business even stronger:

“The closer you are with your team, the better you work together.”

10 Tips on How to Improve Your Writing Skills

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:00 AM PDT

040615 writing

So you have a website for your business. Now what?

Once you do have a website or blog, what do you put there? Contact information is a good start. And you might want to offer a few reasons why visitors should use your service or buy your product. But is that enough? Not according to content marketing experts. You also need solid informational articles and posts that engage readers and position your company as a primary source of expertise.

How do you create great content for your website? Well, unless you’ve hired someone to create those articles for you, that job falls to you. So whether you’re a writer by vocation or not, it’s time to brush up. Here are 10 tips on how to improve your writing skills.

Do Your SEO Work

Search engine optimization involves many on-page and off-page factors. However, it starts with the actual phrases people use in search engines. For example, if you have a landscaping business, a bit of keyword research will reveal an important detail. There are three times as many searches for “landscaping company” as “landscaping service.” So you might want to adjust that article title: “How to Choose the Right Landscaping Company” (rather than “Service“).

Alexis Grant is innovator-in-chief of Socialexis, a content marketing firm that specializes in blog management. She says her company uses the Google AdWords Keyword Planner for SEO research. Getting a monthly count of searches for various keywords is just the start, though.

“It also gives you ideas for keywords associated with the ones you suggested that you might not have thought of,” Grant tells Small Business Trends.  “We also like Google Trends for comparing two specific keywords (for example, job search vs. job hunt) to see which one people are more likely to search for, and SEMrush if you’re willing to pay for a tool for insight.”

You have to open an AdWords account for access to the Google keyword tool. However, once you’ve done that you’re not required to spend any minimum on advertising to use it.

Write What They Want to Read

Keyword research helps you target the right words in titles and sub-headings. It also gives you clues about potentially good topics. Just look for the keywords with the most traffic. Keep it relevant, but you can stretch a bit on topics if you see a big interest in a specific phrase. For example, if (again) you’re a landscaper, and you see there is a lot of traffic for “increase the value of your home,” pay attention. You can put together an article titled, “The Best Landscaping Choices to Increase the Value of Your Home.”

Here are some other ways to determine what visitors might want to read about:

Read comments from previous articles. Ask followers on your social media channels. See which topics have done well on competitors’ sites. Visit relevant online discussion forums.

To locate appropriate forums just search for your niche and the word “forums.” Once you discover where your target audience is hanging out, you can see what they’re talking about. More specifically  you can learn what questions they want answered. And yes, even “landscaping forum” and “landscape forum” produce several good results. There are discussion forums for almost any topic.

Get That Headline Right

What should you say in the title? Naturally it has to be compelling.

“The first important element is clickability,” Grant says. “Will someone who sees that headline want to click and read the article? The headline — along with your feature image — is the first thing readers see, and it’s what they use to make the decision about whether your work is worth their time, so creating a headline they want to click on is highly important.”

Grant says she sometimes creates dozens of headline before choosing one. The selection is then made by balancing the attention-grabbing and SEO factors. Ideally you want something that includes a high-search volume keyword phrase and makes the reader want to read more. Grant says the right adjective can help with the latter.

“Adding an adjective is one way to make headlines more clickable,” she says. “So, for example, rather than saying “10 Ways to Write a Headline,” say “10 Awesome Ways to Write a Headline.” The addition of that one word makes the headline more exciting and clickable.”

Of course, a headline doesn’t always have to make big claims. Say the reader wants to know how to do something. They find your article, and the article has the words “how to” in it. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Make the First Paragraphs Sell the Article

Okay, so you have solid useful content and a catchy headline. And thanks to good SEO, readers are discovering your article months later in search results. Now you have to keep their attention. Grant says “After your headline, the first few sentences are what any reader looks at to decide whether the rest of the piece is worth their time.”

In other words, your introduction has to sell the reader on the value of the article. Tell them something about what they’re going to learn and why that’s important. Grant also suggests that you use the keyword you’re targeting in the first paragraph. That helps the search engines understand what the page is about.

Keep it Easy on the Eyes

Reading on a computer screen or smartphone can be hard on the eyes. Besides, Internet attention spans are short. As a result, you need to make your article easy to read. Keep paragraphs short, use bullet lists and numbered lists. Also, don’t set off large quotes. Avoid large blocks of uninterrupted text.

Have the Right Voice

The “voice” you use will depend on what you’re writing about and your audience. Sometimes a more professional approach is necessary. But Grant says that a conversational tone can be more compelling.

“One thing we try to include in the first few sentences is the YOU voice, where the author talks TO the reader, showing how whatever issue they’re about to discuss applies to YOU,” she explains. “This gives the post a conversational voice and makes the reader feel like it’s applicable to them, so they want to keep reading.”

If you are the face of your business, you might find it useful to talk about yourself and work your experiences into an article. Still only do this when relevant to the topic. For example, if you have a consulting business, a story about what you’ve done for a past client might be a great way to illustrate a point. Just be sure it doesn’t come off as a sales pitch.

Write for an Internet Audience

Writing online is not the same as writing for print media. Grant points out that much of the time online content consists of “shorter, more conversational pieces.” And, in addition to targeting keywords and keeping it easy on the eyes, links are expected. These can be to related useful content, whether on your own website or elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to link to sources when important factual claims are made.

Sell Your Expertise, Not Your Product or Service

Content marketing is not about having a hundred sales pitches on your website. It’s about providing useful information. If readers come to read articles and finds sales copy, you’ll lose credibility. Instead, if you sell wine coolers, write an article on how to choose the right wine and the right temperature at which to serve it. When they’re ready to buy a cooler, they’ll naturally turn to your company.

Write articles even if you aren’t sure you need them. The practice will improve your writing skills. And when you see a great response to an article or blog post, try to decipher what readers liked about it. Then you can practice using those elements in future articles. Perhaps practice doesn’t make perfect, but it always helps.

Use the Right Tools for Proper Grammar

Depending on your audience (and product or service), you might want a detached, professional style. On the other hand, a more informal tone in your online content might sometimes be appropriate. But whatever the style, good English that’s free of typos helps create a better impression. Use a word processing program that identifies both spelling and grammar mistakes. Grant has her writers upload posts to Google Documents for editing prior to putting them on clients’ websites and blogs. It’s free to open an account and use the tools that Google provides.

You might want to run your articles through more than one program, because each has strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you accidentally write “tool booth” instead of “toll booth,” MS Word will not flag the error. However, Google Documents will. Sometimes you’ll have to check other sources. “Nighttime” (versus “night time”) is also allowed by MS Word. However, it too gets flagged by Google Documents.

One Last Tip

You understand your readers. You provide easy-to-read articles full of useful information. You have a great headline, and write in a compelling style. But at the risk of sounding repetitive, did you do your research? Did you get a good keyword in the headline and body of the content?

“This will help your post gain traction over time, because people will continue to find it via search days, weeks, even months after the story has disappeared from the front page of your blog or publication,” Grant says. “Most big outlets get a lot of traffic this way, from posts that published months ago and continue to get read by people who find it through search — all because they optimized for SEO.”

To improve your writing skills and implement a content marketing strategy, you have to understand the differences between online and offline writing.

Simple, Branded Websites From 99Designs and Jimdo

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 07:30 AM PDT

It can be tough on small business owners to match the resources of larger more established companies when establishing a powerfully branded website.

Creating a branded online presence requires you to worry about a variety of details including Web design, hosting, graphic design and more. And all this must be done while trying to focus on your core products and services.

One Stop Solution

Crowdsourced design service 99designs and Web design service Jimdo are hoping to appeal to small business owners seeking a simple one stop solution.

The companies recently announced a new logo and hosted website service aimed at the small business market.

As might be expected from the two companies, the service is a merging of both services in one package. Designers compete on creation of your logo to be placed on a custom-designed website just for your business.

99designs President and CEO Patrick Llewellyn says a strong logo can be critical. In a statement announcing the partnership with Jimdo, he says:

“We think great brands start with a great logo and 99designs has successfully created hundreds of thousands of logos for businesses and entrepreneurs globally. As we’ve grown and evolved, so have our customers’ needs. Now, with the addition of Jimdo, businesses can extend the essence of the brand captured in their logo to their hosted website.”

This service starts at $499 and includes a website and logo, a year of Web hosting and a custom domain name. But there are also other features, as the page describing the new package explains.

What You Get

First, fill out a questionnaire explaining your business and what you would like to see in a logo.

Next select a design package. Packages vary in cost based on the number of designers competing to create your logo.

There are four packages: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The better the metal, the more designers will be competing to create the final result.

Once the package is paid for and the questionnaire is completed, 99designs contacts its community of designers. The company says it has more than 996,000 designers on which to call for help.

Once the designers have completed their work, the logos are uploaded to a 99designs account for each business. There, business owners can give feedback on logos they like, dislike, or believe need more work.

Businesses have a week to pick a winning logo. That’s when Jimdo gets busy creating a custom-designed website that is tied to the initial design.

Making Things Easy

Jimdo says the website created for businesses is simple to update. The goal is to make it easy for small businesses to get a distinctive logo and website of their own.

Jimdo co-founder Christian Springub says:

“This package also allows businesses to manage and edit their website even after the logo design contest is over, without requiring any special skills. Businesses need a strong brand and a strong website presence to succeed and this new partnership will provide that quickly, easily and affordably. Jimdo and 99designs were both founded to help small businesses create and grow and this logo and website package is only the beginning.”

9 Offers That Can Help You Boost Sales This Tax Season

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 05:00 AM PDT

040615 tax time

Tax season isn’t just about getting your return in time and all the commotion that goes with it; it’s also a great opportunity to boost sales. Tax-time promotions, offers and tie-ins can add some fun to this busy time of year and hopefully make you some money too!

Here are some ideas that you might want to use for your small business.

Use the Number “1040”

No one enjoys filling in Form 1040, but as a small business, the number has infinite promotional possibilities.

For example, if you own a restaurant or bar you could offer two dishes, meals, or drinks for $10.40. Retailers could mark down items to $10.40. Or online stores could offer a special promotion that starts at 10:40 or can only be redeemed with coupon code “1040.”

There are probably 1,040 other things small businesses could do along the same line.

Offer a Unique Product in Honor of Tax Day!

Whether it’s the “Tax Man Martini” or the “Uncle Sam Sandwich,” think of ways to offer unique, one-off items that have a tax day tie-in and charge $10.40 or $15 for it (as a nod to April 15).

Come Up With a “Taxing” Catchphrase

Last year, California Tortilla came up with the tagline “Queso Makes Life Less Taxing” and offered free chips and queso with any purchase on April 15.

Get the word out a few days ahead of time on social media and to your email subscribers. Line up some memes, images, and product photos to accompany the catchphrase and let customers know what’s being offered.

Offer a Tax-Free Service

Offer a tax-free dining or shopping experience for one-day only on April 15.

Position Your Offer as a Refund

We’re all hoping for a tax refund, so why not offer your customers one. Instead of the traditional “BOGO” offer, give them a refund when they buy two items in a certain range.

Help Your Customers Relax After Tax Season

Preparing taxes is complicated and stressful. Could your business offer something that can help customers wind down and relax after tax season? B and Bs and hotels could offer a “Tax-Free, Stress-Free Weekend Special.” Spa owners could offer a “Tax Day De-Stress Package.”

Offer an in-room credit (aka refund) or a special service for soothing “taxed” nerves.

Set Up a Pop-up Shop

Get out there among your taxpaying customers and hand out free samples of your products or services. Throw in a free shoulder massage, just for fun.

Run an Early Bird Campaign for Early Filers

Run a promo or special the morning of tax day and position it as a special promotion for those who already have their refunds.

Offer Tax Tips for Next Year

If you’re in the financial services industry, now is the time to start marketing your services. Offer customers a free consultation or product trial and tout how you can help them do a better job of filing next year.

The opportunities are endless. For more inspiration, check out this roundup of Tax Day Freebies, Promotions, Deals and Specials from Forbes, which features a selection of the best promos offered by businesses last year.

Forecasting future flooding

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:16 PM PDT

The Pacific Northwest is dotted by small, low-lying, coastal cities where populations tend to cluster. These communities can be isolated and are susceptible to devastation from major storms that bring substantial wind, waves and storm surge. With climate change, it is anticipated that storms will only become more frequent and intense, signifying a need to understand how the areas will be affected. Future levels of flooding in Tillamook Bay has been the focus of recent study.

Deforestation is messing with our weather, and our food

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:16 PM PDT

Insight into how large-scale deforestation could impact global food production by triggering changes in local climate has been gained by new research. In the study, researchers from the United States and China zero in on albedo (the amount of the sun's radiation reflected from Earth's surface) and evapotranspiration (the transport of water into the atmosphere from soil, vegetation, and other surfaces) as the primary drivers of changes in local temperature.

Low Testosterone not just in males: Testosterone, atherosclerosis and obesity may be linked in females

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:16 PM PDT

While testosterone replacement therapies may be controversial in males, new research may extend this controversy to females too. That's because research involving mice suggests that there is an association between low levels of androgens, including testosterone, and atherosclerosis and obesity in females.

Computer model predicts how our livers will store fat

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:16 PM PDT

As part of an effort to understand how an experimental drug for atherosclerosis causes the build-up of fat in the liver, scientists have developed a computer model that can predict how the rate at which liver stores fat in response to various situations. Being able to model liver fat storage gives researchers a way to predict the side effects of drugs and environmental factors at much earlier stages in the research and drug development process, possibly reducing the number of experiments involving animal models.

Failed synchronization of the womb's clock with mother's body clock critical in miscarriages

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:16 PM PDT

If you are trying to have a baby, a good night's sleep is more important than ever. A new research report shows that the womb has its own 'body clock' that needs to synchronize with the mother's body clock to ensure optimal conditions for fetal growth and development.

Lethal prostate cancer can spread from other metastatic sites, study affirms

A new genomic analysis of tissue from patients with prostate cancer has added more evidence that cells within metastases from such tumors can migrate to other body parts and form new sites of spread on their own.

'Firefly' mechanism makes cancer studies more efficient, less expensive

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 01:15 PM PDT

The mechanism that makes fireflies glow through a process called bioluminescence can be used to study tumor response to therapy as well, researchers have found. Bioluminescence has a major role in small animal research, and the technique has been widely applied in tumor models. The multiple tumor approach can also be used for high throughput screening of a vast range of anti-cancer drug therapies.

Astronomers solve decades-long mystery of the lonely old stars

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 11:53 AM PDT

Many, perhaps most, stars in the Universe live their lives with companions by their sides – in so-called binary systems. Until recently, however, the ancient RR Lyrae stars appeared, for mysterious reasons, to live their lives all alone. A recent study led by Chilean astronomers shows that RR Lyrae stars may not be as lonely as previously thought.

Researchers 'smell' new receptors that could underlie the many actions of the anesthetic drug ketamine

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 11:50 AM PDT

Researchers are continuing their work in trying to understand the mechanisms through which anesthetics work to elicit the response that puts millions of Americans to sleep for surgeries each day. Their most recent study looked at ketamine, an anesthetic discovered in the 1960s and more recently prescribed as an anti-depressant at low doses. They have identified an entirely new class of receptors that ketamine binds in the body, which may underlie its diverse actions.

Older workers bring valuable knowledge to the job

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 11:49 AM PDT

In the workplace, age matters - but hiring or promoting based on age-related mental abilities can be a minefield, according to new research. Older executives bring valuable skills to the job, such as higher "crystallized intelligence," which includes verbal ability and knowledge born of experience, according to a study. But compared with their younger counterparts, older executives show marked declines in "fluid intelligence," which involves the ability to reason, the research found.

How we hear distance: Echoes are essential for humans to perceive how far away a sound is

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 11:08 AM PDT

Mammals are good at figuring out which direction a sound is coming from, whether it's a predator breathing down our necks or a baby crying for its mother. But how we judge how far away that sound is was a mystery until now. Researchers report that echoes and fluctuations in volume are the cues we use to figure the distance between us and the source of a noise.

Complete camel skeleton unearthed in Austria

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 11:07 AM PDT

Archaeologists working on a rescue excavation uncovered a complete camel skeleton in Tulln, Lower Austria. The camel, which was dated to the time of the Second Ottoman War in the 17th century, most likely died in the city of Tulln. Genetic analyses showed that the animal was a male hybrid of a dromedary in the maternal line and a Bactrian camel in the paternal line. The find is unique for Central Europe.

Presence of heart pouch may explain strokes of unknown origin, study finds

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:32 AM PDT

A pouchlike structure inside the heart's left atrial chamber in some people may explain strokes that otherwise lack an identifiable cause, according to researchers. Stroke is the leading cause of long-term severe disability and the fourth-most-common cause of death in the U.S. About 80 percent of the 700,000-plus strokes that occur annually in this country are due to blood clots blocking a brain artery. In up to a third of these cases, the clots’ origin cannot be determined.

Lifting families out of poverty, with dignity

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:32 AM PDT

America's welfare state is quietly evolving from needs-based to an employment-based safety net that rewards working families and fuels dreams of a better life, indicates a new study. The major reason, authors indicate: the little-known Earned Income Tax Credit, a $65 billion federal tax-relief program for poor, working families. The program has been expanded dramatically during the past 25 years, while cash welfare has been sharply curtailed.

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:32 AM PDT

While most people recover from whiplash injuries within a few months, about 25 percent have long-term pain and disability for many months or years. Using special MRI imaging, scientists identified, within the first one and two weeks of the injury, which patients will develop chronic pain and disability. This is the earliest these patients have been identified and will enable faster treatment. The imaging revealed large amounts of fat infiltrating the patients' neck muscles, indicating rapid atrophy.

Migrating immune cells promote nerve cell demise in the brain

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:32 AM PDT

The death of dopamine-producing nerve cells in a certain region of the brain is the principal cause underlying Parkinson's disease. In mice, it is possible to simulate the Parkinson's symptoms using a substance that selectively kills dopamine-producing neurons. Scientists have now shown that after this treatment, cells of the peripheral immune system migrate into the brain, where they play a major role in the death of neurons.

Little Foot is a rare, nearly complete skeleton of Australopithecus first discovered 21 years ago in a cave at Sterkfontein, in central South Africa. Stone tools found at a different level of the Sterkfontein cave also were dated at 2.18 million years old, making them among the oldest known stone tools in South Africa.

Scientists drill down to genetic root of prostate tumor development

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:30 AM PDT

Scientists have revealed the root of prostate cancers in individual men, discovering that despite huge genetic variety between tumors they also share common gene faults -- insight that could offer new treatment hopes. They also revealed more detail about how prostate cancer spreads, showing that the group of cells that first spread from the prostate carry on traveling around the body, forming more secondary tumors.

Antioxidant therapy may have promising potential in concussion treatment

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT

Antioxidants may play a key role in reducing the long-term effects of concussions and could potentially offer a unique new approach for treatment, a new study suggests. Common among athletes and soldiers, it is estimated that 3.4 million concussions occur each year in the United States. The development of a readily available oral supplement would have the potential to improve brain function in a percentage of concussion sufferers.

Phone counseling reduces pain, disability after back surgery

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT

Having a short series of phone conversations with trained counselors can substantially boost recovery and reduce pain in patients after spinal surgery, a new study shows. The phone calls, designed to enrich standard pre- and post-operative care by reinforcing the value of sticking with physical therapy and back-strengthening exercise regimens, are a relatively inexpensive and simple intervention that can maximize surgical outcomes for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who undergo spinal surgeries every year, the investigators say.

Premature aging of stem cell telomeres, not inflammation, linked to emphysema

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT

Lung diseases like emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis are common among people with malfunctioning telomeres, the “caps” or ends of chromosomes. Now, researchers say they have discovered what goes wrong and why.

Exercise for older mouse mothers lowers risk of heart defects in babies

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT

In people, a baby's risk of congenital heart defects is associated with the age of the mother. Risk goes up with increasing age. Newborn mice predisposed to heart defects because of genetic mutations show the same age association. A new study demonstrates that older mouse mothers reduce this risk for their offspring to that of younger mouse mothers through exercise alone, according to researchers.

Springing ahead of nature: Device increases walking efficiency

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 10:27 AM PDT

It's taken millions of years for humans to perfect the art of walking. But research results show that humans can get better 'gas mileage' using an unpowered exoskeleton to modify the structure of their ankles.

Study of brain networks shows differences in children with OCD

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 08:57 AM PDT

Communication between some of the brain's most important centers is altered in children with obsessive-compulsive disorder, a new study shows. The results are highly consistent with observations in the clinic, said a researcher. "Children with OCD are beset by preoccupations and can't easily move on from certain tasks and behaviors. As all complex behavior arises from brain networks, being trapped in this mode must arise from impaired brain network interactions in OCD. In our previous studies we had focused on assessing the structure and the neurochemistry of the anterior cingulate. We had long suspected that brain network interactions originating in this region are impaired in the disorder. But this is the first study to clearly demonstrate this."

Texting too tempting for college students even when inappropriate

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 08:57 AM PDT

College students may realize that texting in the shower or at a funeral is inappropriate, but many do it anyway, according to psychologists. The researchers suggest that college students are not necessarily trying to create new norms in texting behaviors, but that breaking with these norms is just too tempting for them in most cases. When they receive texts, the temptation to check their texts and send messages back is much greater than the urge to pay attention to their present situation.

Old cancer drug could have new use in fighting cancer

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 08:57 AM PDT

An old cancer drug can not only kill cancer cells, but also works to change how certain cancer cells function, weakening those cells so they can be killed by other drugs, a veterinary researcher has discovered.

Anticancer drug can spur immune system to fight infection

A new detection scheme that may lead to the world's smallest gyroscope has been uncovered by scientists. More than creative learning toys, gyroscopes are indispensable components in a number of technologies, including inertial guidance systems, which monitor an object's motion and orientation. Space probes, satellites, and rockets continuously rely on these systems for accurate flight control. But like so many other essential pieces of aerospace technology, weight is a perennial problem.

Mice sing like songbirds to woo mates

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 06:36 AM PDT

Male mice sing ultrasonic vocalizations beyond human hearing to seduce females, according to a new study. The male's loud, more complex hailing song is replaced by a softer, simpler song when the female is near. Researchers developed a new statistical method for analyzing song patterns in mice, because the animals may be useful in research on human communication disorders.

Stop worrying about how much you might blush or your nervous tics, and focus more on being warm, friendly and assertive. The advice comes from researchers who carefully watched what anxious people do during an interview, and how others respond to them.

Combining magnetism and light to fight cancer

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 06:34 AM PDT

By combining, in a liposome, magnetic nanoparticles and photosensitizers that are simultaneously and remotely activated by external physical stimuli (a magnetic field and light), scientists obtained total tumor regression in mice. Non-toxic when they are not activated, such therapies can also achieve a reduction in adverse effects. These results demonstrate the importance of multiple treatments.

Expanding on liquid biopsies with exosomes

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 06:33 AM PDT

A new type of liquid biopsy for solid tumors based on analyzing exosomes from the blood is being tested by clinicians. "The term 'liquid biopsy' describes the fact that a simple blood sample can contain many tumor-derived molecules and even tumor cells, enabling molecular analyses similar to those possible in tumor tissue samples," says a co-lead investigator of the study.

Will the Affordable Care Act eliminate health disparities?

Posted: 01 Apr 2015 05:46 AM PDT

Two new studies from Massachusetts indicate that racial and socioeconomic disparities persist even with nearly universal access to health coverage. In an accompanying editorial, an expert offers perspective on why expanding health coverage is a significant step in the right direction, but may not be enough to end disparities.

Anche oggi qualcosa di nuovo!

Luciano Miniussi (1894-1973)
Gorizia - Graz
19 maggio - 17 luglio 1915

Scopa rotante senza fili ricaricabile. La scopa cordless S-520 è uno strumento ideale per la raccolta di ogni tipo di sporco si in ambiente domestico che professionale.
   Tempo di funzionamento: 45 min;
   Tempo di ricarica: 10-12 ore;
   Tensione ricarica: 220-240V - 50Hz;
   Tensione di esercizio: DC 6.0V;
   Capacità vano polvere: 0,5l;
   Volume ingombro: 220x280x80mm.

Glass Cleaner pulisce ogni superficie liscia come vetri, specchi, piastrelle, pannelli solari.
