Conciliazione lavoro e famiglia: avanti a piccoli passi
06.03.15
Alessandra Casarico e Daniela Del Boca

06.03.15
J.Ignacio Conde-Ruiz e Paola Profeta

06.03.15
Alessandra Venturini e Daniele Vignoli

I nuovi padri? Sono in ritardo
06.03.15
Francesco Billari

06.03.15
Vincenzo Mariani, Pasqualino Montanaro e Sonia Soncin

Flow Hive Makes Harvesting Honey Easier for Bees and Beekeepers Alike

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 06:30 PM PST

Flow Hive Harvesting Honey

Consuming honey may be an enjoyable activity, but gathering it certainly isn’t. Extracting honey from beehives has traditionally been a complicated and sometimes dangerous process.

But now an Australian beekeeper and his son are aiming to change that process. Their product is called Flow Hive. The device dispenses honey from a tap, similar to how syrup is extracted from maple trees. It is a process that is meant to make the process of harvesting honey easier for beekeepers as well as less intrusive for the bees themselves. The product’s Indiegogo page states:

“We are excited to introduce our new invention that allows you to enjoy fresh honey straight out of your beehive without opening it. It’s far less stress for the bees and much, much easier for the beekeeper.”

The father-son team of Cedar and Stuart Anderson have been working for years to develop the product. Stuart Anderson told The Huffington Post that the product is the result of a “decade-long task of inventing the beekeepers dream.”

The team is currently running an Indiegogo campaign to fund the invention. The campaign doesn’t end until April 5, but it has already raised more than $4 million over its $70,000 goal.

There are a few different products that interested parties can order. Some include an entire frame and everything a beekeeper might need to harvest honey (minus the bees). And others just include a few frames that make the honey harvesting process easier for existing beekeepers who already have active hives.

But none of the products will change the other aspects of beekeeping. Though they certainly will have an impact on harvesting honey, beekeepers still need to use care when handling their hives during other activities like swarm control. The product doesn’t eliminate the need for things like bee suits and hive tools. And the Andersons still recommend that new beekeepers seek guidance from experienced ones or established beekeeping groups.

But with so much money raised already, it’s clear that people see a need for this type of product. Harvesting honey is a huge part of beekeeping that used to require a lot of work and extra caution. But this father-son team seems to have come up with a great innovation to make that all a lot easier. And beekeeper and other interested parties have responded.

ypSearch Wants to Be Your One-Stop Shop for Search Ads

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 04:30 PM PST

030915 ypsearch

YP, formerly AT&T Interactive and AT&T Advertising Solutions, says it’s created a new one-stop shop for search ads.

The new service is being touted as a solution for small business owners overwhelmed by maintaining campaigns with multiple search ad providers.

ypSearch is the latest product from YP to cater to small business owners specifically. The search feature for small businesses allows you to manage an online advertising campaign for your company across multiple ad networks from a single platform.

When you place search ads with YP, they’ll appear on YP.com searches, of course. But they’ll also appear on Google, Bing, and Yahoo search results pages because of YP’s relationship with each of those networks, the company says.

YP claims it was the first Google reseller back in 2014 and stands today as one of the biggest Google AdWords Premier SMB Partners. The company is also considered a Yahoo Bing Network Strategic Ambassador.

YP says that a recent comScore study it commissioned revealed that people who conducted searches at YP.com were more likely to buy from sites they visit than any other search engine.

In an official company announcement, Darren Clark, the chief technology officer at YP, explains:

“It is no secret that YP has a massive sales force, which will drive this solution to market, but not many know we have an equally impressive tech team. We have people here at YP who built the original search engine marketing technologies that helped establish the SEM industry. We’re thrilled with ypSearch. Businesses now have a new way to turn local searches into leads for their business by reaching the valuable YP audience.”

YP claims its new service will also automate many of the tasks required to build and launch an online ad campaign for your business.

After your company launches a campaign with YP, ads will appear across the four major search ad networks. And YP says it will track and help manage that campaign, especially in respect to your company’s budget.

As the campaign continues, business owners will be given reports on the effectiveness of their campaigns, while still maintaining the campaign within a budget. And this is all done in one spot through one campaign. With the YP solution, there’s no need to run campaigns on each of these sites individually, the company claims.

Etsy IPO Crafted to Seek $100 Million in Investment

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 02:30 PM PST

etsy IPO

Etsy is planning to go public.

The online marketplace site announced that it had filed IPO paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission to begin the process of opening its stock to the public.

In the filing, Etsy says it hopes to raise $100 million in the sale of its stock with the IPO.

Etsy is exploding in popularity. That’s perhaps due to its recent allowance of sellers who are pitching goods other than those that are handmade.

Changes in the company guidelines in 2013 suddenly allowed sellers on Etsy that partnered with outside companies to produce designs.

The company said at the time that it was trying to create a “diverse community of makers, designers and curators — from the solo artisan just starting out, to the full-time seller hiring staff, to the artist who partners with a manufacturer to bring her creations to life.”

In its initial IPO application, the company notes that revenues nearly reached $200 million last year, when it was less than half that in 2012.

There are 1.4 million active sellers on Etsy. And the company reports that it has 19.8 million active buyers. Last year, the company reports it had record sales among first-time Etsy buyers and repeat customers.

Etsy also says that its mobile app has been downloaded 21.8 million times.

NPR notes in a report that Etsy’s business model is changing. Though sales and use are up, the company is generating a larger share of revenue by selling services like ads and tools to make the Etsy experience more convenient. The share of revenue it gets from sales fees is growing but not at the rate of other services.

In the Etsy IPO filing, the company says its focus in the future will be on helping sellers grow their sales on the site, presumably through more paid services.

All these record numbers that Etsy has built up in a short amount of time may make it sound like a great place to sell goods.

When the site started, it was originally geared to independent designers as an online, global marketplace to sell their handcrafted items.

While it remains a hub for those sellers, there are more users selling similar goods that may not be so handcrafted, at a lower price.

Shannon Whitehead, the founder of Factory45, which is a first that plots a course to launch a product for apparel companies, wrote on the Huffington Post Small Business Blog that the rules changes at Etsy were tough on independent designers.

But there was a way to stand out among a bigger crowd. And with an Etsy IPO in the near future, it could mean that crowd gets bigger.

Whitehead wrote that independent designers that wanted to get noticed amid the growing crowd on Etsy needed to extend their reach.

She recommends creating a network of fellow sellers, using more specific tags in product descriptions, guest posting on the Etsy blog, and re-focusing their marketing efforts off the site and onto other social media sites.

Bad News for Marketers, Pinterest Affiliate Links a “No-Go”

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 12:30 PM PST

030915 pinterest 2

If you were an affiliate marketer using Pinterest, you recently got some bad news.

The social media site just instituted a complete ban on affiliate marketing. That means any affiliate marketer using the social Pinning site has probably had all those links removed by now.

A report from Venture Beat notes that while Pinterest affiliate links have been removed, the Pins to which they were attached remain.

In an email sent to power Pinners that were using the site for affiliate marketing, Pinterest said they’d need to monetize their work on the site in another way.

Venture Beat notes the timing of this announcement, the directives given to those power Pinners, and new initiatives launched by Pinterest to monetize the budding social site on its own.

Pinterest has been stepping up its Promoted Pins program, including the increased presence of these pins on users’ home feeds. These paid Pins had previous appeared on search results and other areas of the site.

Pinterest also tried its own affiliate network and has tinkered with a Buy button so visitors can purchase products directly from a Pin they see. Despite the timing of banning Pinterest affiliate links and its own efforts to monetize the social site, Pinterest says there is no connection.

A spokesperson from the site told Venture Beat that the move was done in the interest of the user experience.

Affiliate marketing expert Geno Prussakov says that those who had been using Pinterest for this purpose should have been preparing for this ban all along. On his Affiliate Marketing Blog, Prussakov writes:

“Quite a number of affiliate marketers are actively using social media for dissemination of their marketing message(s). If you are one of them, you should understand (and appreciate) that third-party online properties — or those of them that owe their success to agility and strategic genius — will never stay inert. Rules will change. Terms of Service will get tweaked to adapt to the external changes, challenges, and opportunities. It’s always going to be about what works best for them (not for those who seek to use their platform as a monetization venue). So, be it Twitter or Facebook, Pinterest or any other third-party property, be ready for an overnight change.”

Chief among the lessons Prussakov says marketers should take from Pinterest’s decision is that building a business model around a site other than your own is never a good idea.

Another lesson is that focusing on one site is not recommended, he adds. It’s important for affiliate marketers to diversify the sites on which they operate, Prussakov says. So if sites other than Pinterest limit your abilities in the future, it’s not the end of the world.

14 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to Measure Customer Service

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 10:00 AM PST

Sponsored Post

030915 customers

How do you know if your customer service is living up to customer expectations? The answer is in KPIs, or key performance indicators.

There are plenty of different KPIs you can use to measure customer service and the success of your business’s customer service strategy. Different ones will make more sense for different types of businesses. Below is a list of different KPIs your business might consider using to measure customer service.

Overall Satisfaction

By performing regular customer satisfaction surveys, you can gauge how many of your customers would rate their level of satisfaction as very or extremely satisfied. The more customers who rate their experiences highly, the better your customer service.

Satisfaction Improvement

One way to measure customer service is to track changes in customer satisfaction over time. If, for example, satisfaction has gone down over the last couple of years, then you’ll know a change is likely in order. But if it’s improving, or if you’ve already achieved high levels of customer satisfaction and they’re staying constant, then you’ll know you’re on the right track.

Customer Retention

Customers who are happy with the service you provide are likely to stick around and do more business with you. So if you’re bringing back a fair amount of customers regularly, that’s a pretty good indication that you’re providing good customer service.

Net Promoter Score

And customers who are very happy with your customer service are likely to even go a step further and recommend your company to others. So your company’s Net Promoter Score, or rate of people who would recommend your business to others, can be a good indication of where your customer service stands and another way to measure customer service.

Conversion Rate

After someone from your customer service team interacts with a customer, how likely are they to make a purchase or take some other kind of action? If your customer service is good, this number should be fairly high.

Compared to Competitors

Even customers who like your brand might not choose you over your competitors for every single interaction or purchase. So while general satisfaction and customer retention are good metrics to measure service, it’s still important to see how your company stacks up against competitors.

Average Resolution Time

Part of providing great customer service is resolving issues in a timely manner. If you can respond to customers and get them answers quickly, they’re more likely to be pleased with the experience. So, if you’re able to keep that resolution time relatively low, that could be an indication of good customer service and yet another way to measure customer service.

Active Issues

If you are able to resolve most issues fairly quickly, then you shouldn’t have too many issues to deal with at any one time. And if you do, then it could indicate that your customers have a higher-than-usual volume of complaints.

Resolved Issues

You can also look at all of the issues that your customer service team has resolved to get an idea of your customer service. No matter how great your company, there are bound to be issues and complaints. But if you’re able to solve them quickly and in a way that makes your customers happy, that’s an indication of good service.

Employee Productivity

Different types of businesses use different methods to measure employee productivity. But it’s an important factor when it comes to customer service. If you want customer issues to be resolved in a timely manner, employees need to do their jobs effectively.

Employee Retention/Employee Turnover

When your employees are happy, they tend to stick around. And when you are able to keep employees around for long periods of time, they’re more likely to feel comfortable and empowered in their jobs. This means they’re also likely to provide service that lives up to your standards.

Brand Attributes

How do customers view your company overall? What words would they use to describe your brand? And how do their opinions line up with your expectations? By obtaining this sort of feedback from customers, you can measure customer service and get a pretty good indication of where you stand in your customers’ eyes. And you’ll know what qualities you might need to work on to get customers to see your brand in that particular light.

Complaint Escalation Rate

No matter how great your service is, you’re going to get complaints at some point. But if you reach a point where you’re receiving an unusually large number of complaints, or your complaints have been steadily increasing without overall customer growth, there could be a problem. Keep an eye on how those numbers change over time. This could also tie in to the number of resolved issues, if you’re tracking that, as well.

Cash Flow

Cash flow can be a great performance indicator for many different business factors. Customer service is such an important factor that it can have a really big impact on your bottom line. If your service is bad, it could drive customers away, decrease referrals and cause potential customers not to complete purchases. But if it’s good, customers are likely to come back, tell their friends and have a big impact on your company’s overall profits.

ADP: Slowing in Small Business Job Creation No Cause for Alarm

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 07:30 AM PST

adp february 2015

Job growth continues to drop across the U.S., but it’s a downward trend that shouldn’t cause much alarm.

The ADP February 2015 Small Business Jobs Report for February reveals that there were 94,000 small business jobs added last month. That figure is down from the 97,000 small business jobs added in January.

And even though that figure represented a dip, Mark Zandi, the chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, says there’s no reason for alarm. Small business jobs grew at a blistering rate before this slowdown, so it’s expected these numbers would take a dip.

In an official statement issued with the ADP Small Business Jobs report, Zandi explained:

“Job growth is strong, but slowing from the torrid pace of recent months. Job gains remain broad-based, although the collapse in oil prices has begun to weigh on energy-related employment. At the current pace of growth, the economy will return to full employment by mid-2016.”

Moody’s Analytics, together with ADP, release a monthly jobs report. The jobs are tallied by company size and whether they provide goods or service to the public.

That “torrid pace” Zandi refers to ended in 2014. For six of the last seven months of the year, small businesses added at least 106,000 jobs per month.

Of those 94,000 jobs added last month by the country’s small businesses, more than half were at companies with 20 or more employees. There, 55,000 jobs were added in February.

Most of the jobs added last month were at companies providing services to customers. About 79,000 jobs were created at these companies last month.

Job growth slowed at larger companies, too. And there were more jobs added at small companies than at either mid-sized or larger companies.

The 212,000 jobs added nationwide last month marked the fourth consecutive month of slowed growth. In January, all companies added 250,000 jobs, according to results from ADP’s National Employment Report for February.

Still, for the last year, each month companies have added at least 200,000 jobs. That’s a point highlighted by Carlos Rodriguez, the president and CEO at ADP. In a statement, Rodriguez said:

“What is also encouraging is that job gains are broad-based across all key industries.”

One key sector that actually saw an increase in the job growth rate was financial activities. There 20,000 jobs were added at companies within this sector last month. That’s up from the 15,000 jobs created in January.

How Do PLA Shopping Campaigns Work in AdWords?

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 05:00 AM PST

pla shopping campaigns

If you’ve been a regular user of Google over the past few years, you know they’re famous for the simplicity of the home page and the spartan nature of their results pages.

As Google has matured and become a publicly traded company, the home page has remained very simple. Yes, they feature a new “Google Doodle” on many days, but the search box is still front and center with virtually no supporting text. The results pages? They feature a lot more these days.

What Are PLA Shopping Results?

On the traditional Google results page you would have 10 organic listings and anywhere from 3 to 11 text advertisements, like this:

Typical-Google-SERP

However, when Google feels like the search is for a product (like my favorite sunglasses from Kaenon here), they show PLA Shopping ads (these used to be called Product Listing Ads, or PLA, so you’ll sometimes see them called that) along with the text listings. The page now looks like this:

Kaenon-SERP

Breaking Down a Shopping Ad

Let’s take a closer look at an individual shopping ad:

pla shopping campaigns

You’ll notice the ad here has 5 components:

Image: This allows people to see what the product looks like. It’s like window shopping for AdWords. Product Name: Tell people exactly what you have to offer. Price: They even know the price before they click. How cool is that? Verified Store: The check mark is earned by qualified stores. For all other listings this just displays the root-level domain offering the product. Seller Ratings: This is an extension that the advertiser must enable and have enough ratings to qualify. As you can see from the example above, it makes this ad stand out from the other 7 ads, so it’s a big boost to have it. How Do PLA Shopping Campaigns Work?

PLA Shopping campaigns still behave on the same auction-based principles as other AdWords campaigns. However, they are set up differently. To get started you need to set up a Google Merchant Center account and create a product feed. This is basically a spreadsheet upload with all the information Google will need, like the image URL for your product shot, the name of the product, brand, condition, price, shipping info, etc.

Once you have this feed, you link your Google Merchant Center Account to your AdWords account and create your Shopping campaign (full step-by-step instructions at that link).

With your product feed uploaded and your Shopping campaign created, you can set your bids and let you campaign do it’s job.

Benefits of PLA Shopping Campaigns

The paragraph above may have made PLA Shopping campaigns sound difficult with talk of a product feed. However, there are some serious benefits you gain with Shopping campaigns:

Visual appeal: Search results pages are predominantly text, so the images in Shopping ads draw serious attention from search users. This leads to higher click-through rate (CTR) and more qualified visits to your site. Trust: Remember the check mark of the verified store? And the seller ratings? By showing on Google and having these elements people who click the site will trust your site as a place they can buy. No sticker shock: The price is right on the ad and it’s next to seven other people selling it, too. If people are price comparing they can do it right there and you know when someone clicks your ad that they won’t be scared off by the price. Conclusion

PLA Shopping campaigns are a must-have for e-commerce websites selling products. They give you great benefits over traditional text-based ads and I typically see great results with my clients.

Expert Picks for the Best Content Marketing Tools

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 02:30 AM PST

best content marketing tools 2

Content marketing is still relatively new as a digital marketing discipline, yet marketers already have hundreds of tools to help make their campaigns more effective. Some of these tools are new generations of existing internet marketing tools, while others have been created to support the very specific needs of content marketers.

In the content marketing space, marketers invest most in curation and aggregation, content creation, and workflow (Altimeter). As for the greatest challenges facing them today, content marketers identified lack of time/bandwidth to create content, producing enough content variety and volume, measuring content effectiveness and lack of budget as their top concerns, according to a LinkedIn Group Partner survey.

Finding the best content marketing tools to address these specific issues (or more likely, a group of tools that play well together) should be at the top of every content marketer’s list.

The Best Content Marketing Tools

curata content marketing tools infographic

Curata recently compiled an epic list of the best content marketing tools tools in the infographic above, segmented into the following categories depending on the type of challenge you’re having:

Producing Distributing Organizing Optimizing Conversions Measuring

Within these very broad categories, you’ll find content marketing tools for dozens of purposes including social media management, blogging & CMS, analytics, personalization and a whole lot more.

I wanted to share a few of my favorites from their Ultimate List of Content Marketing Tools.

Content Marketing Tools for Content Production

Larry’s Favorites: The tools I use for producing content depend on which type of content is being produced.

Curata is my preferred tool for content curation (which is how I came across their infographic!). Their discovery engine searches feeds, sites, social networks and more to find relevant content for you.

For audio content, I use Audacity, which is a user-friendly open source (and free!) audio recorder and editor. You can’t beat Camtasia for screen capture videos, or simple editing of videos you’ve made with a decent camera.

One more of my favorites for content creation is Evernote, which has a super useful app I can use on the go.

Other content production tools to try: If you’re looking to increase and/or ease your production, check out InboundWriter for optimization, Google Docs for collaborative content creation, or Kapost for an end-to-end solution. (Also, check out Meg’s tips for repurposing your existing content.)

Distribution Tools for Content Marketers

Larry’s Favorites: SlideShare is listed as a syndication tool in Curata’s chart and it’s definitely up there as one of my personal favorites, especially for sharing conference and webinar content. You can easily embed SlideShares on your other web properties, but they have a healthy audience of their own there, too.

Another of my favorites that actually isn’t listed here is LinkedIn, which I’ve been using with great success to syndicate blog content and my columns from other publications like Inc.

Other content distribution tools to try: There are a ton of options here, both organic and paid. On the paid side, Outbrain is a super popular service for promoting your content across their publishers network. Traackr, Kred and Klout are useful for identifying influencers in your niche.

Tools to Get Your Content Efforts Organized

Larry’s Favorite: MarketMuse is a fantastic tool for identifying which content topics and specific keywords can generate the most traffic to your site.

best content marketing tools

If you find some keyword tools heavy or difficult to use, definitely give this one a shot – it’s super easy. The first time you use it to crawl a new site, it can take several minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how many pages the site has. Once the site has been crawled, it moves a lot faster to search on specific keywords.

Other content organization tools to try: Enterprise-level brands and marketers might want to try a solution like Adobe’s Experience Manager, for cross-channel organization and integration.

Not big enough for Adobe? Try a tool like digital asset solution Canto, which offers cloud-based plans as low as $49 a month for single users. You’ll then be able to find, upload and share all of your digital assets from the cloud, which is great if your staff work from remote offices or different locations.

Tools for Optimizing Content for Conversion

Larry’s Favorites: Optimizely is pretty advanced, considering the relative lifespan of content conversion in general. You can use it to track a variety of actions – clicks, engagements, conversions, etc. – and run A/B tests on dynamic pages. When you find something that’s working, you can point all of your traffic to that variation immediately. It integrates with most major analytics tools, as well.

My other fave in this arena has to be Pippity, a popup and lead capture plugin for WordPress.

best content marketing tools

You decide when popups should appear and can test variations to find the winner. Their WYSIWYG editor for creating your popups has a lot of templates and customization options, too.

Other content conversion optimization tools to try: BrightInfo is another solution that tracks user behavior and optimizes your site content in real-time, in order to increase conversion through more relevant content delivery.

SumoMe (from the creators of AppSumo) is another interesting option that offers free apps for list building, heat maps to see where people click on your site, and social sharing. It’s as easy as adding a piece of HTML code to your site, or installing a WordPress plugin. Oh, yeah – and it’s free!

Content Marketing Measurement Tools

Larry’s Favorites: While I’ll never find Google Analytics entirely replaceable, HubSpot Analytics is a must-have, too. Sure, you’ll find a lot of the same information in each, but HubSpot’s revenue and marketing channel analytics are a must for enterprise-level marketers. Their funnel analytics are also super helpful and enable you to easily visualize contacts by lifecycle stage:

best content marketing tools

Ironically, Alexa and Quantcast aren’t my favorites for our own analytics, but I use them often to gauge the relative popularity of others when I’m doing research for blog posts.

Other content marketing measurement tools to try: There are some really niche measurement products available now, like Docalytics, which tracks people’s interactions with your downloadable content. Parse.ly is another smart content analytics platform worth checking out.

How Content Marketing Really Works…

I’ve yet to find a single tool that does everything in content marketing from end to end, but those are a few of my best content marketing tools for different types of tasks. Try different combinations of tools to find the right mix for your content marketing needs. Look to Curata’s compendium of tools for inspiration – it’s the most comprehensive list of content marketing tools I’ve ever seen.

Or, if you have a personal favorite, please share it in the comments.

How healthy is genetically modified soybean oil?

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 12:21 PM PST

Soybean oil accounts for more than 90 percent of all the seed oil production in the United States. Genetically modified soybean oil, made from seeds of GM soybean plants, was recently introduced into the food supply on the premise that it is healthier than conventional soybean oil. But is that premise true? Just barely, say scientists.

Snffing out origins of methane: instrument identifies methane's origins in mines, deep-sea vents, and cows

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 12:21 PM PST

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas, second only to carbon dioxide in its capacity to trap heat in Earth's atmosphere for a long time. The gas can originate from lakes and swamps, natural-gas pipelines, deep-sea vents, and livestock. Understanding the sources of methane, and how the gas is formed, could give scientists a better understanding of its role in warming the planet.

Nutrient pollution damages streams in ways previously unknown, ecologists find

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 12:21 PM PST

Mars: The planet that lost an ocean's worth of water

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 11:04 AM PST

A primitive ocean on Mars held more water than Earth's Arctic Ocean, and covered a greater portion of the planet's surface than the Atlantic Ocean does on Earth, according to new results published today. An international team of scientists used ESO's Very Large Telescope, along with instruments at the W. M. Keck Observatory and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility, to monitor the atmosphere of the planet and map out the properties of the water in different parts of Mars's atmosphere over a six-year period. These new maps are the first of their kind.

Menopause is a downright bizarre trait among animals. It's also rare. Outside of the human species, only the female members of two whale species outlive their reproductive lives in such a major way. Female killer whales typically become mothers between the ages of 12 and 40, but they can live for more than 90 years. Males rarely make it past 50. Now, researchers have new evidence to explain why.

Yucatan Peninsula hit by tsunami 1,500 years ago, evidence indicates

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:05 AM PST

The eastern coastline of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, a mecca for tourists, may have been walloped by a tsunami between 1,500 and 900 years ago, says a new study. There are several lines of evidence for an ancient tsunami, foremost a large, wedge-shaped berm about 15 feet above sea level paved with washing machine-sized stones, said the researchers. Set back in places more than a quarter of a mile from shore, the berm stretches for at least 30 miles, alternating between rocky headlands and crescent beaches as it tracks the outline of the Caribbean coast near the plush resorts of Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

Turning a vole into a mighty rodent

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:05 AM PST

Take a wild, common forest-dwelling mouse-like rodent, known as a vole, and subject it to 13 rounds of selection for increased aerobic exercise metabolism, and what do you get? A mighty 'mouse' with a 48 percent higher peak rate of oxygen consumption and an increased basal metabolic rate, compared to unselected controls. Scientists have used an evolution technique that has gained popularity, dubbed 'evolve and resequence,' to measure the genetic changes that pushed the humble vole to Olympian levels of performance.

Neuropathy: Relief for diabetics with painful condition

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:05 AM PST

Those with painful diabetic neuropathy who received two low dose rounds of a non-viral gene therapy called VM202 had significant improvement of their pain that lasted for months, researchers report. "Right now there is no medication that can reverse neuropathy," the study's first author said. "Our goal is to develop a treatment. If we can show with more patients that this is a very real phenomenon, then we can show we have not only improved the symptoms of the disease, namely the pain, but we have actually improved function."

Significant facial variation in pre-Columbian South America

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:04 AM PST

A team of anthropology researchers has found significant differences in facial features between all seven pre-Columbian peoples they evaluated from what is now Peru -- disproving a longstanding perception that these groups were physically homogenous. The finding may lead scholars to revisit any hypotheses about human migration patterns that rested on the idea that there was little skeletal variation in pre-Columbian South America.

Human brains age less than previously thought

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:04 AM PST

Older brains may be more similar to younger brains than previously thought. In a new paper, researchers demonstrate that previously reported changes in the aging brain using functional magnetic resonance imaging may be due to vascular (or blood vessels) changes, rather than changes in neuronal activity itself.

£10 billion GP incentive scheme has no impact on premature deaths

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:04 AM PST

There was no link between 10 billion pound pay-for-performance incentive scheme aimed at GP's and a reduction in premature deaths, an English study has concluded. "If this incentive scheme and others like it around the world are to continue, more attention needs to be paid to ensure that the performance indicators are more closely aligned to evidence for mortality reduction," the first author warns.

Semi-veggie diet effectively lowers heart disease, stroke risk

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:04 AM PST

A pro-vegetarian diet that emphasizes a higher proportion of plant-based foods compared to animal-based foods may help lower the risks of dying from heart disease and stroke by up to 20 percent, according to a large-scale study. Researchers suggest that substituting some of the meat in your diet with vegetables may be a simple way to lower the risk of heart-related death.

Einstein put to the test: Satellite mission on dark energy and theory of gravitation

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 08:03 AM PST

Physicists have gained new insights into dark energy and the theory of gravitation by analyzing data from the "Planck" satellite mission of the European Space Agency (ESA). Their results demonstrate that the standard model of cosmology remains an excellent description of the universe. Yet when the Planck data is combined with other astronomical observations, several deviations emerge. Further studies must determine whether these anomalies are due to measurement uncertainties or undiscovered physical correlations, which would also challenge Einstein's theory of gravitation. Thus, the analysis of the Planck data gives major impetus for research during future space missions.

Poverty, not the 'teenage brain,' accounts for high rates of teen crime

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 05:17 AM PST

While many blame the 'teenage brain' for high rates of teen crime, violence, and driving incidents, an important factor has been ignored: teenagers as a group suffer much higher average poverty rates than do older adults. A new study finds that teenagers are no more naturally crime-prone than any other group with high poverty rates.

Antibodies to brain proteins may trigger psychosis

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 05:13 AM PST

Antibodies defend the body against bacterial, viral, and other invaders. But sometimes the body makes antibodies that attack healthy cells. In these cases, autoimmune disorders develop. Immune abnormalities in patients with psychosis have been recognized for over a century, but it has been only relatively recently that scientists have identified specific immune mechanisms that seem to directly produce symptoms of psychosis, including hallucinations and delusions.

'Life-prolonging' research for cystic fibrosis patients underway

Posted: 05 Mar 2015 05:13 AM PST

Preventing lung infections in childhood could stop later life-threatening infections for people with cystic fibrosis (CF), according to recent research. Scientists are investigating how bacteria found in children with CF can disarm their natural defence mechanisms, making it easier for more virulent bacteria to infect their airways. By the time many CF patients reach adulthood, they have already contracted the chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial strain, which can cause extensive and eventually fatal damage to the lungs. The infection is currently extremely difficult to treat effectively. You are subscribed to email updates from News -- ScienceDaily
